29,000. That's the September jobs number against roughly 90,000 expected, and stocks rallied on it. The S&P 500 closed 0.73% higher at 7,722.72; the Nasdaq jumped 1.19% to 27,190.86; the Dow added 0.49% to 51,176.96. Traders read the weak print as proof the Federal Reserve has no room left to raise rates. CME FedWatch odds of an October hike collapsed to near 22% from about 64% a week earlier. Rate-sensitive small caps led the move; the Russell 2000 posted its biggest daily gain in a month. Tesla rose 4.7%, Nvidia gained 1.3% and chip-equipment maker Teradyne jumped 8%. Nike fell 3.6% on a weak China revenue outlook; Seagate and Western Digital slid after Toshiba warned of more hard-drive supply hitting the market.

Oil moved the other way on the G7's reserve release. WTI settled down 1.90% at $91.11; Brent finished nearly flat at $102.25, after G7 and European leaders agreed to release 100 million barrels of diesel and crude over four months following Trump's threat of a US diesel export ban. The relief was thin. Barclays still raised its Q4 Brent forecast to $115, and tanker attacks near the Strait of Hormuz kept risk elevated. Bond markets did not share the equity rally's optimism. The 10-year yield dipped to 5.16% on the jobs data before rebounding to 5.27-5.29%, having touched 5.34% on Thursday; the global bond selloff is intact, and France's 10-year spread over Germany topped 150 basis points on budget and political turmoil in Paris. The euro sits near $1.13, its fourth straight weekly loss and the longest such streak since May 2025, pushing EUR/USD to its most oversold reading since 2015. The dollar index is near 102, on course for a third straight weekly gain. Bitcoin is stuck around $84,800, up a muted 0.4% after failing at $87,220 on whale profit-taking and heavy sell walls; it is still up 43% for the quarter, Citi has raised its base case to $113,000, but weekly ETF inflows fell to $82.9 million from $2.39 billion the week before.

The Big Story

£2 is where UK diesel sits per litre for the first time ever, higher than after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In the US, diesel has hit record highs near $6.37 a gallon, up roughly 70% since the Iran war began. The squeeze finally produced a policy response. G7 nations agreed to release up to 100 million barrels of oil and diesel reserves over four months, coordinated with the IEA, after Trump pressured European allies with a threatened US diesel export ban. Macron, as G7 chair, announced the coordinated release; the G7 statement condemned Iran's disruption of the Strait of Hormuz and international trade. Trump publicly claimed credit for "negotiating" Europe's diesel release and ruled out the export ban he had used as leverage to get it.

The relief is more political than physical. Energy analysts including Dr. Skip York, Naeem Aslam and Bob McInally are skeptical the release offers much beyond a signal: prices moved on the announcement itself, before a single barrel reached the market, and the underlying shortfall - lost Russian and Iranian exports, reduced refining capacity - remains unresolved. Neil Atkinson of Al Jazeera's panel warned global crude and product supply is still well below pre-war levels seven months into the conflict. Eurozone inflation has climbed to 3.8%, a three-year high, driven largely by energy costs; Bloomberg flagged rising Treasury yields tied partly to that same oildriven inflation.

The human cost is concentrated in transport and food. UK fishing and haulage operators say diesel costs have roughly doubled since the war started and businesses are becoming unviable; US farmers are squeezed too, with Minnesota farm bankruptcies tripling. Holiday airfare has hit a 10-year high on jet-fuel costs. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and PM Andy Burnham are under domestic pressure over the cost-of-living fallout; Sky News framed the G7 deal as a political win engineered by Trump's pressure, timed just over a month before the US midterms, delivering only partial relief to UK consumers. A second US aircraft carrier, the USS Theodore Roosevelt, is now deploying toward the Middle East as the Iran standoff continues. The problem is compounding elsewhere: in Yemen, the Houthi offensive has pushed toward the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, another chokepoint for global shipping, raising the prospect that two of the world's critical oil arteries are under pressure at once. Barclays' $115 Q4 Brent forecast and persistent tanker attacks near Hormuz say the market does not believe this crisis is over.

US Politics

29,000 jobs added in September, against roughly 90,000 expected; unemployment rose to 4.2%, and July-August was revised down by a combined 60,000. Wage growth of about 3% has now lagged 3.4% inflation for six straight months, and real paychecks are shrinking; long-term unemployment hit its highest level since 2015 outside the pandemic. Black unemployment saw its largest monthly jump since 2020. NEC Director Kevin Hassett defended the numbers, blaming roughly 300,000 federal workforce cuts and arguing AI adoption is already lifting sales and wages at firms that use it. He cited Iran sanctions as a bright spot while downplaying the Black unemployment jump as merely "a cause for concern" still being studied.

The data landed in the middle of Trump's 32-day, 17-state midterm blitz through Texas, Oklahoma and Alabama, where he told crowds to vote as if he were on the ballot while privately flagging concern about competitive Senate races in Michigan and Texas. VP JD Vance called the midterm climate "an uphill climb" with "cautious optimism" in an NBC exclusive, declined to commit to 2028 and suggested Ted Cruz is already running for president. The enthusiasm gaps showed. Trump gave Texas AG Ken Paxton a lukewarm shout-out ("I don't really care"), and the Senate Leadership Fund pulled ad money from North Carolina to shore up a surprisingly competitive Kansas race. Democratic fundraising surged in response; ActBlue reported a record $833 million raised in Q3. Trump is promising $5,000 "dividend" checks and $500 ACA-overcharge refunds if Republicans hold Congress, a pledge that sits awkwardly against Harry Enten's data showing Trump's net approval on cost of living at a historic low.

Legal setbacks piled up alongside the economic ones. A federal judge halted border wall construction across the roughly 500-mile Big Bend sector in Texas, ruling that environmentalists, landowners and business owners - including Republican sheriffs who joined Democratic ranchers against the barrier - are likely to succeed on claims the Department of Homeland Security ignored environmental law to speed up building. In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul appointed Attorney General Letitia James special prosecutor after accusing Cornell police and the Tompkins County DA of mishandling a 2024 gang-rape allegation. A sanitized six-page police report had omitted the accuser's explicit statement that she was raped, despite a roughly 120-page full file existing. The case has spawned a viral "I Am Jane Doe" movement, an 80% spike in calls to the national sexual assault hotline, and a legislative push, backed by Hochul, to close a loophole that excludes voluntarily intoxicated victims from rape protections. In Tennessee, Governor Bill Lee halted all executions for the rest of 2026 after Christa Pike survived two botched doses of lethal injection and remains hospitalized on a ventilator. The case has become a flashpoint in the state's governor race: Republican Marsha Blackburn is pushing to restore the electric chair, and Democrat Jerry Green backs a moratorium.

Elsewhere in the administration, Trump is expected to name Jay Clayton, currently Director of National Intelligence, as AI czar succeeding David Sacks, a move that follows tech CEOs signing a voluntary AI-safety pact critics call largely symbolic. A separate diplomatic claim ran into trouble. South Korea disputed Trump's announcement of a $54 billion Alaska LNG pipeline investment, saying it has not signed off and is still assessing commercial viability, an episode widely read as Trump overstating a win to help Senator Dan Sullivan's tough midterm race. CNN obtained internal Kennedy Center documents showing a 42% drop in gifts and a morethan-100% drop in pledges since Trump's name was added to the building; the center is now "out of cash," with a deficit projected to grow to $23 million in 2026, and its Honors ceremony will be held off-site for the first time in nearly 50 years.

World

A cluster of terror cases is rattling the UK. Two Iranian nationals who arrived by small boat, Salim Ahmadian and Rahman Salihi, were charged over an alleged Yom Kippur-eve chlorine-bomb plot against Manchester's Jewish community, allegedly in contact via encrypted app with a third party believed to be in Iran. Separately, the man charged with murdering former MP Ann Widdecombe was additionally charged with preparing terrorist acts, including an alleged plot against Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, covering activity from May 2024 to July 2026. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood called any attack on a politician "an attack on us all." A 25-year-old dual British-Iranian national was bailed after arrest over a suspected plot at RAF Fairford, the base used by US bombers that struck Iran in March; PM Andy Burnham and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio have both pointed to possible Iranian involvement, which Tehran strenuously denies.

France's budget crisis turned violent. Nationwide student protests over teacher shortages and crumbling schools shut down 400-700 schools and brought nearly 2,000 arrests, many of them minors; clashes, tear gas and fires hit Paris, Strasbourg and Toulouse. The government blames "violent small groups" for hijacking a peaceful movement; French bond spreads over Germany widened sharply as France Unbowed's Jean-Luc Mélenchon floated "burning" the debt. In Spain, parliament rejected Pedro Sánchez's emergency housing decrees - a rent freeze and eviction ban - after the Catalan party Junts sided with the right, days after mass protests over the eviction of an 87-year-old woman whose rent had been raised 430%. Protesters camped in Madrid for nearly a week are now calling for a general strike, and Sánchez could be pushed toward snap elections as early as November 29. Latvia voted amid fears of Russian aggression; the incumbent pro-Ukraine prime minister is expected to hold power despite fragmentation, and a factory near Riga reports a surge in orders for anti-tank "dragon's teeth" border defenses. Russia escalated its own rhetoric. Putin told Moscow that any direct attack threatening the Kaliningrad exclave could trigger the use of "all types of weapons," language analysts read as anxiety over the enclave's isolation since Finland and Sweden turned the Baltic into what one called a "NATO lake."

Two wars widened. In Yemen, the Houthi offensive has pushed toward the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, displacing more than 150,000 people; heavy fighting along a 15km front near Taiz killed a 14-day-old baby among the casualties, and Saudi Arabia reported intercepting Houthi ballistic missiles aimed at its southwest. In Ethiopia, explosions were reported overnight in Addis Ababa as a new alliance including the TPLF clashes with federal forces across Tigray, Afar and Amhara. Ethiopia closed its Eritrea embassy and expelled ten diplomats, Eritrea cut ties in response, and analysts warn the US lifting of arms sanctions on both countries could now fuel a fresh weapons flow into the conflict. Brazil heads into a tight first-round presidential vote this weekend between incumbent Lula and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, with crime and femicide dominating the campaign and polls pointing to an October 25 runoff.

Disasters & crime

Buckingham Palace confirmed King Charles will not formally apologise for slavery during his Bahamas, Guyana and Antigua tour, addressing instead "the darkest days of our past" without a reparations commitment. Jamaica is separately pursuing legal clarity on whether slavery was lawful at the time.

Former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn was convicted on all nine counts, including aggravated murder, in his wife Ashley Flynn's shooting death; the jury took just over two hours despite no recovered weapon, relying on disabled security cameras, mistress texts and smartwatch data. Newly unsealed bodycam footage shows the December 2024 arrest of Luigi Mangione at a Pennsylvania McDonald's, officers finding a gun, a silencer and handwritten notes in his backpack. His lawyers are now seeking dismissal of the separate New York murder charge on double-jeopardy grounds. South Korea's president threatened "correspond‐ ing measures" against Ukraine unless Zelensky apologizes for disclosing that Kyiv transferred two captured North Korean soldiers to Seoul, a rift analysts tie more to Lee Jae-myung's domestic politics than to the soldiers' welfare.

Business & tech

Maryland banned surveillance and dynamic pricing in grocery stores as scrutiny grows over AIdriven retail pricing. A Reuters investigation found McDonald's AI pricing engine produces Big Mac price gaps of over 10% between nearby franchises, which the company disputes as "speculative"; Walmart's CEO and StubHub both denied setting prices by customer identity.

Culture & sport

Manchester City is appealing a Premier League commission's ruling that it used "sham" sponsorship deals to hide roughly £900m-$1.2bn in Abu Dhabi-linked funding over nearly a decade. CEO Ferran Soriano declined to answer when confronted on camera; sanctions could range from points deductions to expulsion, and whistleblower Rui Pinto says he is losing his Portuguese witness protection over the case.
