5.34% was the 10-year Treasury yield on Friday, the highest since 2002; the 30-year closed at 5.59%. That selloff drives almost every other number in this table: it pushes the dollar higher, it pressures gold and crypto, and it adds equity pullback risk even as headline indices hit records. The Nasdaq hit an intraday record on Nvidia's rally and Micron's blowout earnings; the Dow lost 1.3% on the week on the same yield pressure. Leadership stays narrow, concentrated in a handful of AI-exposed names, heading into third-quarter earnings season.

Equities shrugged off September's weak jobs print on the logic that softer labor data makes a near-term Fed hike less likely, with ISM Services and Wednesday's FOMC minutes next on the calendar.

WTI settled at $90.34 late last week and eased toward $90 on Monday as Middle East exports recovered and the G7 moved to release more than 100 million barrels of emergency diesel and crude reserves. Iran's refusal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz keeps geopolitical risk high ahead of the next OPEC+ meeting. Crude is easing; US retail gasoline isn't, holding near $4.38 a gallon on the AAA national average. Refining capacity is the real constraint now, not crude supply. Gold holds near $4,150 an ounce, having given back ground last week as real yields rose, then steadied as yields and oil both softened.

Bitcoin reached nearly $87,000 early Monday, about $500 short of its eight-month high, then slipped back to just under $86,000, the second rally in a week to stall below that level. It still faces thin liquidity, cooling ETF demand and an October 31 Mt. Gox repayment deadline (labeled wallets still hold about 34,388 BTC, roughly $2.88 billion). The euro fell about 0.7% to near 1.12, a 17-month low, as French fiscal worries widened French-German bond spreads; a firm dollar, driven by those long-end US yields, added pressure even as eurozone inflation rose to 3.8%.

The Big Story

A third US aircraft carrier left San Diego this week. The USS Theodore Roosevelt will join the USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington near Iran by late November, the largest American naval buildup in the region since 2003.

Trump told reporters a decision on Iran is coming "the easy way or the hard way," and claimed Tehran is "virtually giving up any plans of a nuclear weapon." Iran's position hasn't moved. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says there is "no military solution," but Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf repeated that the Strait of Hormuz stays closed until Iran's seven conditions under the Islamabad understanding are met. One defense analyst told DW the three-carrier posture opens a window for a possible strike campaign after the midterms rather than an immediate escalation; a former US diplomat on Al Jazeera's Bottom Line went further, predicting "escalation from Iran before the midterms" and "military strikes from the United States after."

The war's edges reach well beyond the Gulf. Yemen's government launched a full offensive this week to retake Houthi-held territory, after the Houthis' lightning advance toward the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and Red Sea coast. The Houthis retaliated by striking a Saudi Aramco oil facility in Riyadh with missiles and drones, and a tanker was hit near Hormuz in a separate strike. Analysts told Al Jazeera the Houthis are "a very different creature" than in past rounds, fielding upgraded drones, Cornet missiles and long-range ballistic weapons tied to continued IRGC support. IOM figures put displacement above 145,000 and still climbing as fighting intensifies around Taiz and the Red Sea coast. Sky's Alex Crawford, one of the first foreign journalists to reach the Bab al-Mandeb frontline, found children among the wounded and warned the strait's global shipping role is directly at risk. A displaced woman she spoke to, Ada, said: "We have nothing left."

Britain is tangled in the same thread now. The US quietly withdrew all 12 B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, a week after several men were arrested nearby on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts. Those men were later bailed, which sits awkwardly next to PM Andy Burnham's earlier suggestion of a possible Iran link, something Tehran denies. The Pentagon's explanation ran to one vague line about bombers returning "to their home stations." NBC led its Nightly News broadcast on the withdrawal as a rushed, urgent move; DW's read was more measured, framing it as an overdue response to the drone vulnerability that cost Russia part of its strategic bomber fleet in Ukraine. Separately, two Iranian nationals who arrived in the UK by small boat were charged at Westminster Magistrates' Court and sent to the Old Bailey over an alleged chlorine-bomb plot against Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester, timed around Yom Kippur. Prosecutors say the men were "coached by an Iranian national, likely based in Iran" and face a potential life sentence. The case has become a flashpoint in Britain's small-boats debate, with Nigel Farage citing it as vindication of his migration warnings.

Energy markets are carrying the cost into politics. For Trump, a war meant to be resolved quickly is instead running into the midterms, dragging naval assets, European air bases and pump-price anger along with it.

US Politics

29,000 jobs were added in September, against roughly 90,000 to 100,000 expected; unemployment ticked up to 4.2%. Economists blame some of that rise on workers re-entering the labor force rather than mass layoffs. The wage picture is harder to spin: pay sits at a five-year low, and Navy Federal economist Heather Long says real, inflation-adjusted wages have been essentially wiped out since April. Markets rallied anyway on the logic that weak data makes an October Fed hike less likely; odds fell from roughly 70% to about 22%. A December hike is still broadly expected. Mortgage rates near 7-7.5%, after a sharp weekly jump that took the Freddie Mac 30-year average to 7.28%, continue to freeze real-estate activity. Democratic Senator Mark Warner called the report "evidence of how bad this Trump economy is"; NEC Director Kevin Hassett countered that AI-driven productivity gains are being undercounted and that firms adopting AI show higher sales, employment and wages. Separately, NBC's Steve Kornacki tied the economic discontent to a collapse in Trump's approval among Latino voters, down to 27%, with nearly four in five disapproving of his handling of the cost of living.

Trump used the week to reframe the whole AI debate. He hosted Nvidia's Jensen Huang and representatives of Google, OpenAI, Meta and Elon Musk at the White House, announcing a voluntary, "morally binding" industry safety accord with no audits or penalties attached. He also declared the industry's name changed: "It's not AI. It's SI. We've changed the name officially today to SI. Super intelligence." A new Super Intelligence Force, led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton and FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, is to produce a risk report within 120 days. Trump dismissed safety concerns as a "hoax" comparable to climate framing, arguing bad actors "will get caught" through existing law enforcement. The public isn't convinced. A Reuters/Ipsos poll found 73% of Americans say AI companies aren't doing enough to prevent serious harm; a CNN/SSRS poll found 75% leaning toward fear or concern about AI overall, with 87% worried about the growing number of AI data centers. A former Trump AI policy official, Satya Thalem, called the accord "rebranding" and pointed to an Iran-linked, likely AI-assisted hack of more than 100 US municipal water systems in July as proof the risk is real and unaddressed.

Two stories this week exposed institutional strain. New York Governor Kathy Hochul stripped the Cornell fraternity rape case from the Tompkins County DA and named Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor, after reporting showed campus police allegedly withheld the accuser's explicit rape statement from prosecutors, who then declined to pursue charges based on an incomplete record. Hochul said "no institution gets to protect its reputation at the expense of a young person seeking justice," and separately called for closing a legal loophole that fails to protect victims who were voluntarily, rather than forcibly, intoxicated. RAINN reported an 80%-plus spike in calls to the National Sexual Assault Hotline since the case went public. Cornell's president called the case "deeply disturbing" and welcomed an outside review, after USA Today reported more than 1,200 Title IX reports at Cornell over seven years and only 21 suspensions or expulsions among them.

In Tennessee, Corrections Commissioner Frank Strada is resigning this month after death row inmate Christa Pike survived two doses of lethal injection drugs and remains hospitalized, reportedly on a ventilator. Governor Bill Lee has halted all executions in the state for the rest of the year and ordered an independent review of the execution protocol, the state's second failed execution since May. Forensic experts say lethal injection's national botched-execution rate is about double that of other methods, and blame restricted pharmaceutical access and medical-ethics rules that bar physician participation. May Martinez, mother of Pike's 1995 murder victim Colleen Slemmer, told reporters she "didn't get justice for my daughter."

Brazil's presidential election delivered one of the country's tightest first-round results on record. Flavio Bolsonaro, son of imprisoned former President Jair Bolsonaro, unexpectedly led incumbent Lula, about 47% to 45%, short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff. The two now head to a second round on October 25. Roughly 33 million registered voters abstained, a figure correspondents flagged as a potential swing factor. Markets read Bolsonaro's lead as fiscally friendly and sent the Brazilian real and local equities sharply higher in after-hours trading. The contest reads as a referendum on alignment: Lula's non-aligned, BRICS-oriented foreign policy against Bolsonaro's closer ties to Trump, whose "Shield of the Americas" rhetoric explicitly excludes Brazil. CNN's Christopher Sabatini called it "really a family grudge match," symptomatic of a political class that has failed to produce new leadership; DW noted this may be the 81-year-old Lula's "swan song" regardless of the outcome.

Ethiopia's Tigray conflict escalated sharply. Drone strikes reportedly hit Addis Ababa overnight, the first on the capital, after a new armed coalition including the TPLF signed an agreement vowing to oust Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Federal forces separately recaptured Mekelle, Tigray's regional capital, after the TPLF said it had "retreated" and would govern remotely; analysts caution the gain may be temporary and that Ethiopia risks "mistaking military victory for legitimacy." Ethiopia accuses Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt of backing the rebel coalition; all three deny it. Roughly 150,000 people have been displaced amid a communications blackout, with hospitals overwhelmed by severely wounded patients.

Two European elections moved in the same direction. Latvia's centrist, pro-Ukraine United List alliance won the country's parliamentary election with roughly 42 of 100 seats, beating the populist Latvia First party in a frontline state bordering Russia; the incumbent prime minister must now form a new coalition.

Bosnia and Herzegovina held elections for more than 500 officials, including a rotating tripartite presidency, under the Dayton powersharing system; the Republika Srpska presidency race, pitting continuity of Milorad Dodik's policies against a rival candidate, was described by one analyst as "a three-dimensional chess play" that will shape the country's stalled EU membership bid as Russia, the US and Israel all vie for influence.

In Britain, two domestic fights reopened old wounds. Green Party conference delegates voted 1,022 to 813 to declare Zionism a form of racism. Leader Zack Polanski stayed away from the vote and didn't disavow it, drawing criticism from the Board of Deputies of British Jews ("not the actions of a leader, but a bystander"), while four of the party's five MPs declined to back the motion. Israel's Foreign Ministry accused the party of "giving legitimacy to terrorism" and barred Polanski from entering the country.

Separately, PM Andy Burnham used his Labour conference speech to say leaving the EU "has done more damage than benefit." That reopened the Brexit question, even catching some cabinet colleagues by surprise. A YouGov poll found 59% of Britons now favour rejoining the EU, versus 32% opposed. Former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon argued that if Brexit can be reopened, so can Scottish independence, accusing the government of picking "when democracy applies." Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch opened her party's conference in Birmingham with a 95-page manifesto, "The Right Way," and a pledge to scrap the childcare "cliff edge" by extending free hours to all parents working 16-plus hours regardless of income. An internal split over the pensions triple lock overshadowed the launch.

Two further incidents carried international weight. UAE prosecutors named Omani co-pilot Hamam al-Hamami as the man who used a cockpit crash axe to attack the captain of a FlyDubai flight to Israel in an attempted hijacking. He had previously been barred from flying by both Oman and Air Maroc over extremist concerns. US officials and a former Israeli security official now call it a lone-wolf act. Netanyahu met the passengers who subdued him, calling it an averted "second 9/11."

In Japan, a US Marine stationed on Okinawa was arrested after a woman was found dead in a Naha hotel room. Japan's Ministry of Defense lodged a formal protest, saying it was "deeply outraged." That revived decades of local resentment over the American military presence there.

A Gulfstream medical transport jet carrying six people, four Canadians and two Bermudians, vanished early Saturday on a flight from Bermuda to Boston, dropping roughly 13,000 feet before losing contact. The Coast Guard located a debris field 20 miles off Nantucket in 80-90 feet of water after a search covering about 4,445 square miles, then suspended the operation and shifted to recovery.

A parking-spot dispute at a Baltimore youth football homecoming event escalated into gunfire, killing a 12-year-old girl and wounding three adults; Mayor Brandon Scott said "two grown men got into an argument... and two cowards pulled guns on each other" with children present.

A six-month Sky News investigation exposed a criminal network called "the Com" grooming children into self-harm and abuse across Roblox, Discord, TikTok and Telegram, including self-harm-themed items sold to children as young as five on Roblox; Ofcom says the Online Safety Act limits it to acting on systemic platform failures rather than individual content.

The UAE (whose Sheikh Mansour effectively owns Manchester City) is reportedly weighing pulling major UK investments after an independent commission found the club guilty on all charges in the Premier League's 115-charge finance case, putting PM Burnham and Justice Secretary Alex Norris in the position of fielding questions about economic interest versus accountability. Possible sanctions include points deductions, fines, transfer bans or expulsion, to be set in a further hearing; the club says it will appeal.

An independent commission found Manchester City guilty of all charges related to serious breaches of Premier League financial rules, a case spanning 115 charges over alleged inflated revenues and understated costs. Possible sanctions include points deductions, fines, transfer bans or expulsion; the Premier League says those will be set in a further hearing. The club said it will appeal.
