7,818.95 is where the S&P 500 closed, up 0.58%, a fresh record; the Nasdaq added 0.45% to close at 27,599.79, also a record; the Dow rose 253 points to 51,521. AMD gained 2.8% after CEO Lisa Su said compute demand is outrunning supply; Nvidia pushed toward a $6 trillion market cap. The rally rides on a cooling labour market: September nonfarm payrolls rose just 29,000 against a 90,000 forecast; unemployment ticked up to 4.2%; traders trimmed bets on another Fed hike this month. FOMC minutes land at 2pm ET today; the next meeting is October 27-28.

5.27% is where the 10-year Treasury yield sits, after touching 5.35% on Monday, its highest since April 2002; the pullback eased pressure on growth stocks, though the MOVE index still shows bond volatility elevated enough to worry macro desks.

$90 is roughly where WTI sits, up 0.7% after a near-2% slide to five-week lows on Tuesday. Houthi strikes on Saudi targets, and the threat to the kingdom's East-West pipeline, are outweighing the partial recovery in Hormuz flows and a G7 release of 100 million barrels. Brent trades near $101.76; the EIA has lifted its own forecasts sharply: Q4 Brent averaging about $105, $14 above its prior estimate, with 2026 pegged near $96. It cites falling global stockpiles and diesel supply squeezed by the Iran war.

$84,067 is roughly where bitcoin sits, down 1.7% after twice failing to hold $86,000 on Tuesday, despite friendly CFTC and SEC crypto-regulatory news. ETF inflows have slowed and momentum is fading; the $84,000-$87,722 range is in play into next week's CPI print, while Strategy added another 334 BTC to its stack. EUR/USD sits near 1.12, down 0.26%, with the dollar at its strongest since April 2025 on French debt worries, Middle East safe-haven flows and a hawkish Fed tilt; the pair is now four weeks into a downtrend.

The Big Story

Three fronts of the same war moved at once today; the Middle East conflict has outgrown its original borders. In Yemen, Saudi-backed government forces pushed Operation Dawn of Yemen forward, claiming to have recaptured the port of Mokha and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait from the Houthis; the Houthis dispute the claim and say they held the Al-Waziyah district above Taiz. The Houthis retaliated with drone and missile strikes on Saudi airports in Jizan and Najran, claimed a hit on Riyadh's international airport, and vowed a "blockade for blockade" against nearly every Saudi airport and Aramco's oil infrastructure. Inside besieged Taiz, Sky's Alex Crawford found government troops fighting with "20 bullets in a plastic bag" and a hospital turning away premature babies; civilians are trapped with dwindling medical supplies.

The strait's contested status is now a line item on oil desks: it is one reason WTI bounced 0.7% today after Tuesday's five-week low.

The response to that offensive is reshaping regional alliances. Turkey and Pakistan activated the Mecca Defence Pact with Saudi Arabia for the first time, pledging troops after weeks of Houthi attacks on the kingdom. That commitment complicates Pakistan's other job: mediating between Iran and Washington. Analyst Michael Kugelman called it "a balancing act from the start"; Islamabad has to keep assuring Tehran it isn't fully in league with the Saudis while deploying forces alongside them.

Iran is the second front. Trump told a Baltimore rally that Iran's navy and air force are destroyed, claiming Iranian ships sit "at the bottom of the sea" and a US Navy "wall of steel" blockade that has let no ship through to Iran; he also claimed Iranian inflation had exploded and said "nobody knows who the hell is running the country." Oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz has recovered close to pre-war levels under US naval escort; that is pushing Iran to shift pressure toward Yemen's Bab al-Mandeb instead, tying the two fronts together. A senior Trump administration official told Al Jazeera the US "holds all the cards." Iranian hardliners are calling for revenge at the UN; executions of political prisoners inside Iran have surged. Former Iranian and US diplomats Hossein Mousavian and Alan Eyre both forecast Iranian escalation before the US midterms, and possible American strikes after them.

The third front landed in Gloucestershire. The US pulled roughly a dozen B-1 bombers out of RAF Fairford days after a suspected terror plot near the base led to arrests. Trump said threats tied to Iran forced the move, "they didn't fly out by accident," contradicting Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who called it a routine rotation. JD Vance split the difference, citing "an abundance of caution." Bloomberg, citing Wall Street Journal sourcing, reported an IRGC-linked plot to kill American pilots in their living quarters with a vehicle bomb, alongside a drone threat modelled on Ukraine's Operation Spiderweb. British police made a seventh arrest, a 22-year-old detained in Westminster; six earlier suspects remain on bail. Iran denies any involvement; Manchester mayor Andy Burnham is among UK officials pointing toward it anyway.

A possible fourth thread is the FlyDubai cockpit attack, though no state link has been confirmed. Investigators now say Omani co-pilot Hamam al-Hamami attacked his captain with a crash axe, intending a 9/11-style strike on Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport; the captain and crew subdued him after a roughly 30-second freefall, and a third pilot landed the plane. Al-Hamami had been banned by an Omani airline over radical views and had posted extremist material online; how he was still flying is an open question. Israel's own transport ministry admitted its vetting procedures didn't check foreign crew names. Trump told reporters he personally believes Iran was behind the attempted hijacking.

US Politics

Four weeks out from the midterms, Trump is campaigning almost entirely in states Republicans already hold; that reads as anxiety, not confidence. At a Nebraska rally he repeated his pledge to hand every adult citizen $5,000 if the GOP keeps both chambers: "if the Democrats win, you will have a 1929-style economic depression... if the Republicans win, you will each have $5,000." The promise carries a roughly $1.3 trillion price tag and needs congressional approval that even many Republicans doubt is realistic; NBC and CNN both found voters openly skeptical in street interviews.

The same trip produced a reversal. After bipartisan criticism, including from Senate Majority Leader John Thune, over taxpayer-funded political-style ads, some paid through DHS and ICE budgets and one nearly identical to a 2024 campaign spot, Trump said he will now fund the ads himself and through MAGA Inc. instead. He also signed an executive order easing restrictions on tax-exempt "red dye" diesel to cut fuel costs for truckers and farmers, a move CNN's Matt Egan called a "pre-election tax holiday" rather than a structural fix.

The one stop that broke the red-state pattern was Baltimore. Trump unveiled a roughly $6.6 billion public-private investment anchored by defence-tech firm Anduril's $3.7 billion "Arsenal 2" shipyard, which will build autonomous submarine components and parts for Virginia-class submarines, projected to create more than 3,100 direct jobs and support 11,000 nationally; he said taxpayers will hold a 40% stake. Maryland's Democratic governor, Wes Moore, said he was barred from speaking at an event that landed a major investment in his own state.

A former FBI supervisor filed a Senate Judiciary Committee complaint alleging the White House and Justice Department, including Director Kash Patel, pushed the Bureau to investigate anti-ICE protesters in Los Angeles despite no legal basis; the whistleblower says the targeted conduct, using a megaphone and warning the community, was "strictly First Amendment" activity. The mandate allegedly came down through the then-acting No. 2 at DOJ as well as the White House and Patel, covering two separate incidents. The whistleblower has since resigned.

France's Act 3 protests became the biggest yet: hundreds of thousands of students, teachers and parents shut or blockaded nearly 900 schools over crumbling, underfunded classrooms. Clashes in Paris, Lille, Lyon and Marseille brought tear gas, pepper spray and stun grenades; a 15-year-old in Lens reportedly lost a hand after picking one up. More than 5,000 arrests have been made since the movement began three weeks ago, most of them minors. Trump called the unrest a product of "mass migration" and "Islam wanting to take over" on Truth Social; CNN's Melissa Bell fact-checked that live from the street, attributing it instead to the French state's inability to fund education. The movement is bleeding into 2027 presidential positioning now, with Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon both circling; Bloomberg flagged France as the eurozone's "weakest link" on bond markets.

Brazil's election went to a runoff: Lula and far-right Senator Flavio Bolsonaro will face off on October 25 after neither cleared a first-round majority, Bolsonaro taking roughly 47% to Lula's near-45% and outperforming his jailed father's 2022 result. Bolsonaro-aligned candidates swept both chambers of Congress, so even a Lula win leaves him governing against a hostile legislature.

Britain's Conservative Party used its Birmingham conference to unveil a £10 billion Britannia Shield missile and drone defence plan. Kemi Badenoch conceded a snap election would produce a hung parliament but ruled out a coalition with Reform UK: "we'd rather have another election." The conference was overshadowed by the death of Jeffrey Archer at 86, covered below. The Green Party's leader, Zack Polanski, stayed silent for days after conference members passed a motion branding Zionism racism, drawing an "extremist party" accusation from the Board of Deputies of British Jews; four of the party's five MPs voted against it.

Germany's former BND intelligence chief August Hanning, who ran the agency from 1998 to 2005, was arrested on suspicion of attempted treason for allegedly selling classified documents to a foreign intelligence service over roughly a decade, a case that surfaced incidentally during an unrelated child-abduction probe. It landed a day after Germany's current spy chief warned parliament of a Russian "shadow war," though one expert told DW the destination state is more likely in the Caucasus.

In the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia's Abiy Ahmed said his country will keep pursuing Red Sea access "through peaceful means" as tensions with Eritrea rise after Addis Ababa's break in diplomatic ties; a drone strike on an IDP camp in western Tigray killed at least eight and wounded dozens, on top of a displacement crisis already running at an estimated 4.5 million people inside Ethiopia.

In Siberia, the death of a 28-year-old researcher at an anti-plague institute near Irkutsk, officially attributed to "pneumonia of unknown origin," triggered the quarantine of roughly 200 contacts; the WHO called the risk low to moderate regionally and very low for Europe, but the scale of the quarantine for a routine pneumonia death has drawn skepticism from US infectious-disease specialists, and Secretary of State Rubio pressed Moscow to "share more information with the world."

Belgian-American physicist Francis Halzen won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a detector buried 2,000 metres deep in Antarctic ice that caught the first high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin; at 82, he joked the prize might help him win approval for his next project.

ASOS shares fell as much as 11% on an extortion notification claiming its Snowflake data platform was "fully compromised"; the retailer later said only basic contact details may have been exposed and Snowflake found no breach of its own platform on investigation.

In Florida, a car crossing the centre line near Winter Haven caused a school bus to flip into a head-on collision with a Jeep, killing 10th-grader Adina Luz Prieto-Oyola and 26-year-old Deshaun Smith; the driver at fault is cooperating and isn't expected to face charges, and the bus driver freed herself from the wreckage to help trapped students.

Thousands protested Cornell University's handling of a 2024 alleged gang rape; the faculty senate is moving toward a no-confidence vote against administrators. Leaked texts show a fraternity leader telling members to "get their story straight," and Cornell has hired Sally Yates to run an independent review. Death-row inmate Christa Pike, who survived a botched lethal injection last week, is now conscious and speaking in hospital; Tennessee's prisons chief resigned and the state has paused all executions. Chicago's Marimar Martinez, shot five times by a Border Patrol agent, filed a federal lawsuit backed by a reconstruction analysis disputing his self-defence claim; the agent is on administrative leave. A Tempe, Arizona officer caught on viral video punching Arizona State student Erin Bonner is under internal investigation after felony charges against her were dropped; the city has since filed misdemeanour charges against her instead. Two Sussex Police officers were sacked for gross misconduct after tasering and pepper-spraying a 92-year-old dementia patient, Donald Burgess, who died 22 days later. A US Marine was arrested over the strangling of a woman in Okinawa; Japan's prime minister lodged a rare formal protest. A California realtor was charged as an unregistered Chinese foreign agent for allegedly surveilling the family of Taiwan's president's son; Taiwan calls it transnational repression, Beijing calls it "hype."
