$88.28 a barrel is where WTI settled on Wednesday, down 1.3%; Brent settled at $100.20, down 0.38%, as Iranian tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi-Houthi clashes and a hurricane bearing down on Gulf Coast output remain stacked on already-depleted global inventories. The IEA agreed to speed up an oil-stock release.

Equities gave back some of Tuesday's record close: the Dow fell 0.66% to 51,179.87, dragged down by a 5.75% drop in Caterpillar; the S&P 500 fell 0.22% to 7,801.77 and the Nasdaq fell 0.22% to 27,538.69 as investors weighed strong earnings forecasts against a bond market that will not stop climbing. The 10-year Treasury yield touched 5.35%, its highest level since 2002, before a $39 billion auction pulled it back to around 5.29%. Fiscal risk, inflation worry and a wave of AI-linked corporate debt issuance are pushing yields higher.

SpaceX put a name to that AI debt wave today. Elon Musk's company is in talks with Apollo, PIMCO and a syndicate of banks to raise roughly $40 billion: about $10 billion in bank loans, $30 billion in investment-grade and private credit, to fund Nvidia chip purchases for its data-center and xAI buildout. SpaceX reportedly holds close to $100 billion in cash; its five-year credit-default-swap spread still jumped to levels not seen since June, and its secondary bonds sold off. Credit markets are pricing AI-debt concentration risk that equity holders are not. Ray Dalio called the AI buildout a "classic bubble" approaching its burst point on air. Apollo's Jim Zelter countered that the real lesson of any capex cycle is not taking equity risk for a fixed return. Nvidia and Micron alone account for roughly a third of this quarter's S&P 500 earnings growth. Only about 25% of index members trade above their 50-day moving average even as the index sets fresh records. A handful of giant stocks are carrying the index while SpaceX lines up that financing. LSEG expects 30.6% earnings growth for the S&P 500 this quarter, led by energy at 114.7% and tech at 66.5%. Shell raised its own Q3 guidance on strong refining margins and higher gas production.

The September Fed minutes showed officials leaning toward another rate hike before year-end; the odds of an October hike are priced below 20%. A weak September payrolls print complicates that: just 29,000 jobs against 90,000 expected, unemployment at 4.2%. Bitcoin slid to $82,600, down 0.81% and off a failed run at $87,000, after roughly $550 million in mostly long positions were liquidated. ETF flows were mixed. The euro sits near 1.12 against the dollar, up 0.11% on the day but still close to a 17-month low of 1.1161. Its RSI sits at the most oversold level in a decade; the Fed-ECB rate gap and a broadly strong dollar keep pressure on the pair. Traders are watching Thursday's ECB accounts for any shift in tone.

Two corporate milestones closed today. Skydance completed its $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery. The company said the combined business will keep the Skydance name under Chairman and CEO David Ellison, and CNN and CBS News are corporate siblings for the first time. The combined company carries roughly $80 billion in debt; Bloomberg's own analysts called the deal historic but flagged the integration challenge.

Shein listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange after abandoning earlier New York and London plans, at a valuation that has collapsed to roughly a quarter of its prior $100 billion peak. Net income fell 39% last year and the company posted a $99 million loss in the first quarter of this year; French customs data show small-parcel imports from China down as much as 40% as Western regulatory pressure bites.

The Big Story

Three years ago today, Hamas killed almost 1,200 people and took 251 hostages in the attack that reshaped the Middle East. Israel marked the anniversary with memorials at the Nova festival site near Re'im and at Kibbutz Kfar Aza. The commemorations landed three weeks before an October 27 election that 62% to 66% of Israelis say the attack will decide. The anniversary and the ballot box have become the same story. Reports in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal allege Netanyahu was personally warned by the UAE and Egypt before the attack and failed to act; the claims hang over the vote. Netanyahu calls the reports "lies" and is suing Haaretz over a related story. No formal state inquiry into the security failures has been held, and protesters outside the Knesset want one. The election is a judgment on Netanyahu himself.

The war the attack started has not stopped. A ceasefire has nominally held for about a year; Israeli strikes still killed several more people in Gaza through the commemorations, including a Civil Defense worker near Kamal Adwan Hospital. Multiple networks cited 1,400 to 1,500-plus Palestinians killed since the ceasefire began, on top of an overall toll the Hamas-run health ministry puts between roughly 70,000 and 74,000-plus. Diplomatic friction is widening alongside it. Israel has threatened to close the British consulate in East Jerusalem in retaliation for UK sanctions on West Bank settlements; a Board of Deputies vigil in London coincided with pro-Palestinian marches police had asked organizers to reschedule, producing 11 arrests, five for inciting racial hatred.

The parallel war with Iran is where the anniversary's politics meet active combat. Trump told reporters Iran's military is "wiped out" and said the US is "essentially" guaranteeing Iran will never get a nuclear weapon. Rubio went further, saying Iran will "never" have one "as long as President Trump is in office." The numbers on the ground tell a less settled story. The UK Maritime Trade Operations Agency counted at least nine attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz in the first week of October alone, already half September's full-month total, even as Rubio insisted the strait is "open" and oil flows are nearing pre-war levels. A Bloomberg defense analyst publicly contradicted that claim on air, citing rising attack frequency the same week. Tanker captains are being paid up to $100,000 a month plus bonuses to run the route; freight rates on the route have hit a record. Vice President JD Vance acknowledged in a Reuters interview that Washington cannot identify a single, unified Iranian negotiating partner given rival power centers around Khamenei, Pezeshkian and the IRGC. "Material reductions" in enrichment capacity must come before real talks begin, he said.

That unresolved war produced the day's sharpest political collision. At a Nebraska rally, Trump said it would be "a small price to pay" if an adversary were to "take out" Los Angeles or San Diego rather than let Iran get a nuclear weapon: "Let him take out Los Angeles. Let him take out San Diego." California Governor Gavin Newsom called for Trump's removal under the 25th Amendment, calling the remark advocacy for an attack on more than 10 million US residents. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called it horrifying and tied it to the earlier deployment of federal troops to her city. The White House said Trump meant the reverse, that the US must prevent Iran from striking those cities, and dismissed the backlash as a "media freak-out." The criticism crossed party lines anyway: Republican San Diego-area congressional candidate Jim Desmond said "no American city is expendable."

US Politics

38% to 39% is Trump's current approval rating, worse than the 43% he held ahead of the 2018 midterm wave that cost Republicans 40 House seats. CNN's Harry Enten called the Senate battleground picture "not like a midterm surprise, but like a midterm nightmare" for the party; prediction markets now give Democrats roughly a two-in-three chance of winning the Senate. The clearest symptom is Texas, a state no Democrat has won statewide since 1988: Talarico has led Paxton in 17 of the last 20 polls, by as much as six points in one New York Times/Siena survey. Leaked audio caught Paxton privately telling donors he does not control his own campaign's message, blaming Trump's Iran war and the resulting gas and diesel prices for his collapse even as he kept praising Trump in public. Trump made his third Texas trip in a month anyway, rallying in San Antonio and calling Talarico a "Democrat communist." Governor Greg Abbott skipped the joint event, citing a scheduling conflict amid his own tightening re-election race. Paxton's own former impeachment defense attorney, Dan Cogdell, said he would vote for Talarico instead, calling Paxton "the most corrupt politician in America."

Affordability is the thread pulling races apart nationally. 28% of voters cite inflation or cost of living as their top issue, per an NBC poll; diesel prices are up roughly 70% to 77% since the Iran war began, and gas is averaging $4.36 to $4.37 a gallon. Trump signed an executive order allowing tax-free red-dye diesel on highways to defer fuel taxes, a move industry groups call legally shaky since only Congress can eliminate the tax itself. Facing the backlash, Trump floated sending Americans $5,000 "Trump dividend" checks if Republicans hold Congress; NBC correspondents and even his own rally attendees met the pledge with open skepticism that Congress would ever fund it. Republican candidates in competitive states are putting daylight between themselves and the president. Michigan's Mike Rogers released an ad explicitly breaking with Trump over Canada tariffs ("Canada is not our enemy. We need to end this trade war now"). Maine's Susan Collins said she does not expect Trump to campaign for her and called herself "not exactly his favorite senator." Ohio data-center backlash is reportedly costing Senate candidate Jon Husted votes among lifelong Republicans.

Alaska is the exception: JD Vance and Senator Dan Sullivan used a joint Anchorage appearance to unveil a $350 billion South Korea investment package tied to the Alaska LNG pipeline, the first direct federal funding commitment the project has ever received, and framed it as a midterm-season win against Democratic incumbent Mary Peltola.

The administration paired its defense of the midterm map with a fresh jobs announcement in Maryland. Trump unveiled an Anduril shipyard investment at Sparrows Point worth $3.7 billion by one account and $6 billion by another, with over 3,100 jobs projected and taxpayers holding a reported 40% stake. Governor Wes Moore said the White House blocked him from speaking at the event despite his administration's role negotiating it; the White House accused him of "throwing a tantrum." Moore noted Maryland's job growth is running at nearly double the national average over six months. "I am not here because of the President of the United States," he told reporters.

World

Russia launched one of its most intense missile and drone assaults of the war on Ukraine overnight, hitting Kyiv, Chernihiv and a dozen other regions. Death tolls climbed through the day from an initial two to figures between 18 and 28; a single Chernihiv apartment strike killed 9 to 18 people, including children. Zelensky called the timing, Vladimir Putin's 74th birthday, a deliberate "birthday gift" and an act of terrorism. Correspondents described Russia exploiting depleted Ukrainian air defenses and reduced US support to hit civilian and energy infrastructure ahead of winter, with rolling blackouts of up to 14 hours a day expected. Russia's defense budget is on track for a record year after Putin added nearly $60 billion beyond the original plan; analysts read that as preparation for more fighting, not negotiation. The war's reach extended into NATO waters for the first time this week. Drone strikes sank one commercial vessel and struck a second roughly 70 miles off Bulgaria, inside its economic zone; one crew was rescued, the other's sailors left missing before Bulgaria called off the search. Zelensky blamed Russia, which has not commented. The strike cannot be formally attributed, so NATO analysts say the alliance remains stuck in a "grey zone" of statements rather than any Article 4 or 5 response.

More than a quarter of a million people protested across France in some of the country's largest education demonstrations in decades. Clashes in Paris, Lyon and Strasbourg produced over 500 arrests in a single day and more than 6,000 since the movement began two weeks ago; France suspended police use of stun grenades after a 15-year-old lost a hand to one. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu promised proposals by month's end but no new funding. The unrest is inseparable from France's fiscal crisis: 10-year borrowing costs have jumped sharply and the spread over German bunds has widened, driven by a hung parliament and a widening deficit ahead of next year's presidential election.

In Germany, former BND chief August Hanning was arrested on suspicion of treason, accused of receiving roughly 2,000 classified documents over 14 years from a former agency colleague. The foreign power that received the material remains unclear; one network points away from Russia toward a Caucasus state. In the UK, Kemi Badenoch closed the Conservative conference pledging that "nobody will ever pay inheritance tax on their family home." Fresh polling showed her Conservatives flat near 20%, behind both Labour at 27% and Reform at 22%.

Houthi missiles and drones struck Aden's international airport and, on successive days, Saudi Arabia's Abha and King Khalid International Airports, killing at least three people. The UN says more than 200,000 people have been displaced by the latest fighting around Taiz and the Bab al-Mandeb corridor. Saudi Arabia pressed Washington twice for direct military support and was turned down, with the US citing its focus on Iran; Pakistan and Turkey instead pledged troops to the kingdom under the Mecca mutual-defense pact.

Russia's Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute reported a 28-year-old researcher's death from what Moscow called "pneumonia of unknown etiology" after she reportedly broke a test tube handling plague samples. Roughly 200 contacts were quarantined; the WHO rated the international risk low but said Russia has been "tight-lipped," and Trump said he would raise the case directly with Putin. Kenya confirmed its first-ever Ebola case after a man who had worked in the Democratic Republic of Congo died in Nairobi, having transited undetected through Uganda. Officials traced between 28 and 57 close contacts, plus the 27 passengers and crew on his flight.

ASOS shares fell further after a hack in which attackers reportedly used compromised push notifications to tell customers directly that their phones had been breached. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to Henri Kagan and Kenso Soai for work on asymmetric synthesis, including a Soai reaction that amplifies molecular chirality roughly 630,000-fold; the research explains why one mirror-image form of a drug can be safe while the other, as with thalidomide, causes catastrophic harm. Stanford's Karl Deisseroth won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for optogenetics, a technique using a light-activated algae gene to switch brain cells on or off.

A rapidly organizing Gulf of Mexico system was forecast to become Hurricane Isaias, the Atlantic's first hurricane of an unusually quiet season, with landfall projected as a Category 2, possibly briefly Category 3, storm somewhere between the New Orleans area and the Florida Panhandle late Friday into Saturday. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 25 counties; forecasters warned of 5-to-7-foot storm surge and up to 10 inches of rain. AI forecasting tools, including Google DeepMind's WeatherNext, are trending toward a track further east than traditional physics-based models, a disagreement meteorologists are tracking in real time.

Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike is conscious and speaking in full sentences after surviving two doses of lethal injection drugs in a botched September 30 execution. She remains hospitalized with a blood clot and pneumonia; a Nashville judge has ordered the state to preserve all evidence as her lawyers pursue an Eighth Amendment challenge. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended, and Trump approved, execution by firing squad for Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan on December 3, which would be the US Army's first execution since 1961; legal analysts say his remaining appeals could outlast the current administration.

FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest of an 18-year-old accused of plotting an ISIS-inspired mass shooting at the Mall of America for October 24, after he bought an assault rifle and 200 rounds from an undercover agent and told investigators he hoped to kill 30 to 60 people, citing an explicitly antisemitic motive.

A Washington state man was charged with conspiracy over February's deadly livestreamed school shooting plot in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, accused of funding and advising the teenage shooter over a months-long online relationship. A California couple was charged with abusing 21 children from a private surrogacy operation at an Arcadia mansion prosecutors called a "house of horrors," with more than 30 hidden cameras found and bail sought at $100 million each. A former senior CIA officer, David Rush, pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $194 million by fabricating a secret agency program; investigators found 600 pounds of gold bars and $2 million in cash at his properties. Pennsylvania's measles outbreak has grown past 1,000 cases and five deaths since April, the deadliest US outbreak in three decades; national cases are near 3,900 against a historical annual average of about 100.
