$91.85 is where WTI sits after Trump pledged not to strike Iran before the midterms; Brent holds $102 to $106. The relief is thin. Hurricane Isaias knocked out 60% to 63% of Gulf of Mexico crude production ahead of landfall. Iranian state media said two tankers were struck by mines in the Strait of Hormuz after they tried to transit without IRGC permission; the chokepoint has not calmed. Freight rates for Gulf-to-Asia supertankers hit $1.4 million a day, a 540% jump since before the war; insurance costs run up to 100 times higher than a year ago. The G7 released 100 million barrels from strategic reserves. Trump's Russia diesel deal adds 300,000 tons immediately and up to 1 million tons a month after that. Bloomberg Economics puts the real-world effect at about 2% of US daily demand. Bloomberg Intelligence forecasts European gas prices could jump 20% to 25% this winter, from roughly €76 to €93 per megawatt hour.

$4.1 billion is Delta's Q3 fuel bill, up 62%; the airline missed estimates and cut its outlook. AI stocks kept pushing Wall Street to records regardless, with the S&P 500 up 0.6% as Iran fears eased. European equities are not sharing the mood. The CAC 40 sits about 12% below its August peak, weighed down by French fiscal worries that are also dragging the euro to its fifth straight weekly loss near $1.12. The dollar's fourth consecutive weekly gain is its longest streak since May 2025.

$82,600 is where bitcoin landed after dipping to $80,400 on Thursday, its lowest level in three weeks. About $1.09 billion in leveraged positions were liquidated in 24 hours, more than 96% of them longs. US spot bitcoin ETFs saw $244 million of outflows on October 8, on track for a weekly outflow above $700 million. The 10-year yield's climb past 5.36%, its highest since 2002, is squeezing risk appetite broadly. CPI is due Wednesday; traders are pricing December rate-hike odds at 70% to 85%.

$70 billion is the annualized revenue OpenAI still expects to hit by year-end, per Bloomberg's clarifying reporting, after an initial report of a roughly $50 billion run-rate briefly hit Nvidia, Oracle, Broadcom and SoftBank, via its OpenAI stake, in a tech selloff. The gap was mostly an accounting-convention mismatch with Anthropic rather than a real shortfall; markets largely recovered. Fermi did not recover. The Nvidia-backed Australian AI data-center firm scrapped its IPO after investors balked at a $30 billion valuation against roughly $60 million in revenue. Panmure Liberum's Joachim Klement forecasts a 2027-28 bubble burst implying roughly 36% S&P 500 downside; about half of Nvidia's GPUs sit in data centers that aren't yet operational. Goldman's Christian Mueller-Glissmann counters there's no bubble, pointing to a lack of investor euphoria. SpaceX rattled telecoms after it acquired low-band spectrum to turn Starlink into a nationwide mobile carrier: AT&T fell roughly 10%, T-Mobile 12% to 13%, Verizon about 9.5%. Starbucks shares drew attention on a report it's exploring a Chipotle takeover, a deal that would reunite CEO Brian Niccol with his old chain and create one of the largest restaurant companies in the world.

The Big Story

25 days separate Washington from the midterms, and the Iran war has become the fault line running through almost every other story of the day. Trump posted that the US is having "productive discussions" with Iran and will not attack before November 3; the naval blockade and new "Operation Economic Outcast" sanctions stay in place instead. A State Department spokesman said Iran's currency is "in free fall." That pledge calmed oil prices for a few hours. It did not calm the region. Houthi rebels, who draw weapons and direction from Iran, answered by hitting Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport with cruise missiles, killing a Saudi pilot and two others and damaging a nearby kindergarten and health clinic. Saudi Arabia retaliated with roughly 77 airstrikes in 24 hours on Houthi-held Yemen, hitting Sana'a's airport, factories and telecom infrastructure, and claimed 136 targets destroyed. The Houthis vowed to keep striking "every Saudi airport except those near Mecca and Medina": "blockade for blockade, airport for airport." Pakistan and Turkey confirmed they're willing to send troops to defend Saudi Arabia under August's Mecca mutual-defense pact.

Trump's no-strike pledge aside, Fox News and other outlets reported the Pentagon has contingency plans ready for renewed strikes; Israeli officials were reportedly briefed on a three-week window for resumed action. DW's regional analysts say Iran's IRGC, not its negotiators, holds the real leverage right now. One panelist put it bluntly: "the Mullahs clearly look to be the better players." The consensus across Al Jazeera, Fox, DW and Bloomberg is that nothing fundamental has changed. One analyst called it "a game of chicken."

The economic bleed-through is the part voters feel directly. Attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz have roughly doubled this month versus September, with at least nine direct tanker attacks so far. Iraq devalued its currency about 15% to offset lost oil-export revenue; Pakistan rolled out fuel subsidy tokens after a near-50% jump in pump prices. Trump tried to blunt the political cost at home by announcing Russia will supply diesel to global markets, 300,000 tons immediately and rising toward 1 million tons a month, timed to ease fuel prices before Americans vote. Zelensky called it "a gift to Putin" that funds the war rather than ending it. Analysts across Bloomberg, Sky and NBC agreed the volume barely moves the needle: Sky's Mark Stone said it "would satisfy the US market for less than two days." A former CIA officer on Al Jazeera called it "cosmetic," a "disgusting, but expected betrayal of American policy." It shows how exposed Trump is heading into November: he reached for a deal with Putin to manage a crisis his own Iran policy helped create.

US Politics

68% of Americans disapprove of Trump's handling of the economy, and that number is doing the work in Senate debates across Michigan, Georgia and Maine, where contests have turned sharply personal with 25 days to go. In Michigan, Republican Mike Rogers accused Democrat Abdul El-Sayed's mother's former employer of funneling money to Al Qaeda. El-Sayed called Rogers "the best con I think I've ever seen" and tied $80 gas fill-ups directly to "the war in Iran, a war that has been cheer led by my opponent since the beginning." Trump branded El-Sayed a "radical, extremist, terrorist sympathizer" on social media and declared Rogers had "completely obliterated" him. Polling cited by NBC shows El-Sayed ahead anyway, in a seat Democrats "should normally win easily." In Georgia, incumbent John Ossoff accused Republican Mike Collins of staffing his office with neo-Nazi sympathizers, telling him "if John Lewis were marching today from Selma to Montgomery, Mike Collins would be grabbing a billy club."

In Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson accused Senator Susan Collins of personally profiting from the Iran war; she called it "absolutely outrageous" and demanded an apology on air.

Trump is campaigning hard in friendly territory to offset the exposure: he rallied in Syracuse for a gubernatorial candidate while JD Vance stumped in Ohio for a Senate candidate. He also floated a $5,000-per-adult "Trump dividend" payment contingent on Republicans holding Congress, even as he claims credit for solving an affordability crisis voters say they still feel. Cook Political Report has moved several races toward Democrats, and Democratic enthusiasm is outpacing Republican enthusiasm this cycle.

The administration is fighting on several fronts at once. The DNC sued the White House, alleging roughly $20 million was diverted from Customs and Border Patrol funding to pay for pro-Trump television ads ahead of the midterms. Trump said he'd personally fund future ads while insisting "I'm promoting the country," though the DNC says taxpayer-funded versions are still airing. NBC reported the DOJ is pursuing an indictment of former Trump aide Cassidy Hutchinson over her January 6th committee testimony, in which she said Trump fought his own security detail and ignored pleas to call off the Capitol mob. In the Bronx, an ICE agent shot and wounded 28-year-old Oscar Belgol in the neck during an enforcement operation, with his five-year-old son in the back seat. Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the shooting "an outrage" and demanded ICE leave the city; DHS officials held a combative press conference blaming Belgol's prior release under sanctuary policy and placing responsibility on Mamdani directly. NBC reported this is at least the 25th person shot at by federal immigration agents since Trump took office. The White House also formed an investigative committee to probe mortgage-fraud allegations against Fed Governor Lisa Cook, compelling her to a closed-door hearing on November 5, two days after the election. Her attorney called it a "kangaroo court"; analysts read the move as part of a wider campaign to pressure the Fed toward lower rates.

Ukraine-Russia: a Russian strike on a bus stop in Kramatorsk killed roughly 30 to 36 people, among the deadliest single strikes on civilians this year. NATO's full military committee, all 32 allied chiefs, visited Kyiv for the first time in eight years, a deliberate show of solidarity. US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff met Ukrainian, European and NATO officials in Miami on a new proposal to end the war. Rubio said "there is no military solution" but that Washington won't "invest in pointless processes." The diplomacy sits awkwardly next to Trump's Russia diesel deal, which Zelensky condemned as rewarding Moscow mid-war.

Gaza and international law: Navi Pillay, the 85-year-old South African jurist who defended Nelson Mandela and later chaired the UN inquiry that found Israel committed genocide in Gaza, won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize "for her efforts to promote peace and international law." Israel's government compared the award to Nazi propaganda and invoked Joseph Goebbels. Hours later, Rubio escalated from sanctioning individual ICC officials to sanctioning the court itself: "either the ICC will end its threats, or we will end the ICC." Nearly every outlet flagged the timing as deliberate. The ICC called the sanctions "an assault on the rule of law." The EU, Canada and Japan condemned them, and the EU signaled it could invoke a blocking statute.

Natural disasters: Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida, with winds of 105 to 120 mph. Storm surge reached up to nine feet and forced mass evacuations across Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia; power outages topped 400,000 to 500,000 overnight.

A 7.6 to 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Panama's southern coast, collapsing a hotel, a hostel and a 400-year-old colonial bell tower and setting off tsunami warnings across five countries; a shallow, land-based fault rupture meant the tsunami threat proved minimal. A rare Tropical Storm Rachel flooded Long Beach and Newport Beach, California; forecasters warned of surge up to seven feet by Monday.

European unrest: France's student and teacher protests entered a third week over crumbling schools. Police met them with tear gas and stun grenades until the government suspended the latter and pledged 3,000 additional teachers. The unrest spread in tone, if not coordination, to Belgium, where union marches against budget cuts turned into clashes with riot police in Brussels, and to Spain, where the eviction-linked death of 87-year-old Marie Carmen Abascal set off mass Madrid protests. PM Pedro Sanchez called a snap election for November 29; polling suggests a possible majority for the right-wing People's Party and far-right Vox.

Everton's owners, the Friedkin Group, announced they're exploring a sale of the club less than two years after taking control. Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca gave his first press conference since the club was found guilty of more than 100 financial fair play breaches. His verdict: the titles are "absolutely not tainted."

Business & tech

Microsoft and Adobe were suspended from the PERM green-card program. JD Vance said "there has been no company in the United States, unfortunately, that has abused the system more than Microsoft." Trump awarded National Medals of Science and Technology to Elon Musk, Satya Nadella, Sergey Brin, Lisa Su, Jensen Huang and Michael Dell the same week NSF funding was cut by $1.5 billion. A Sky News investigation found Nazi speeches and marching music used as background audio on roughly 72,000 TikTok videos. SpaceX's Crew-12 capsule splashed down after 237 days aboard the ISS.

Labour's Sagal Abdiwali, a former Somali refugee, won the Holborn and St Pancras byelection with 45% to Green leader Zack Polanski's 33%. She is the first Briton of Somali descent elected to Parliament, and the result was read as a "Burnham bounce" for new PM Andy Burnham. Polanski's party is still absorbing fallout from its conference's "Zionism is racism" motion, which former leader Caroline Lucas called a "red line." Northern Ireland's secretary banned a contentious Orange Order march through Portadown after a two-week standoff. A former German intelligence chief, August Hanning, remains in detention accused of passing secrets to China and Azerbaijan after leaving office. DW revealed Germany's classified 1,000-page NATO plan to move 800,000 troops through the country in a Russia crisis; the plan is undercut by a shortfall of roughly 70,000 soldiers. Prince Andrew surrendered his Royal Lodge lease early; King Charles personally covered a roughly £1.5 million shortfall after Crown Estate compensation fell short of his repair bill.

Disasters & crime

Yorkshire declared a formal drought despite the October date. Sky's new data tool found over 4,000 UK daily temperature records broken in 2026, more than any prior year, even as northwest Scotland had one of its wettest, coolest summers on record. A Siberian lab worker's death, initially feared plague-related, was reattributed to pneumonia after roughly 5,000 tests found no pathogen; her mother disputes the official account.

The Pentagon confirmed Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hassan will face a livestreamed firing-squad execution on December 3, the first public US military execution since WWII. Trump personally approved it: "I really don't care how he goes as long as he goes." The move drew bipartisan criticism, from Senator Tom Tillis ("beyond disgusting") to Senator Chris Murphy. Tennessee death-row inmate Christa Pike, believed to be the only person in US history to survive a lethal-injection attempt, has resumed walking and eating in hospital a week after the botched execution; the state has paused all 2026 executions pending review. Hall of Fame Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka died at 86. A Latvian pair were arrested for trespassing at RAF Molesworth, unrelated to the recent RAF Fairford incident. Prosecutors say murder suspect Joshua Carey will face terrorism charges over an alleged plot against Nigel Farage, at the same trial as the Ann Widdecombe hammer-murder case. US prosecutors added torture charges against Nicolas Maduro and his wife Celia Flores; a freed American prisoner testified to shocks and sirens used on him inside a Venezuelan prison. Sean Combs lost 41 days of good-conduct time and was placed in solitary after NBC video showed him using a contraband phone in prison. His release date now moves to March 2028.
