7,807.24 is where the S&P 500 closed, down a fractional 0.06%, while the Nasdaq dropped 0.44% to 27,245.90 on a chip selloff; Micron fell 3.9% on competition from China's CXMT and dragged the Philadelphia semiconductor index down with it. The Dow bucked the trend, up 0.38% to 51,850.55. $92.63 is where WTI sits, down 1.18%; Brent held near $105 after a Monday settle of $106.65, its highest close since September 15. Two forces are pulling oil in opposite directions: Trump's pledge to bring in Russian diesel and ease sanctions is pushing prices down, while Houthi strikes on Riyadh and tanker attacks near the Strait of Hormuz are pushing them up. Diesel itself fell for a third straight day in New York on Trump's promise that Russia would release 4.8 million tonnes of supply; skeptics note that volume covers only about a day and a half of US demand, and lawmakers on both sides say the arrangement may violate the law Trump signed himself. $83,568 is roughly where bitcoin trades, up 2.22% and holding inside an $81,000-to-$87,200 range as traders brace for Wednesday's CPI print and a Fed Chair Warsh speech on October 15. Cleveland Fed president Hammack called for quick, incremental tightening Monday, a hawkish line that lifted the dollar and kept bond yields elevated. EUR/USD is up 0.15% near $1.12, a modest bounce off 17-month lows around 1.1154; French fiscal strain, with yields near 4.85%, and a snap election in Spain are capping any recovery, though record euro short positioning leaves room for a squeeze if sentiment turns. The week's real test lands at the open Tuesday: JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citi report alongside UnitedHealth and Johnson & Johnson, and investors are counting on strong thirdquarter numbers to hold the market up against oil and rate pressure that isn't easing.

The Big Story

14 is the minimum death toll from a second Houthi strike on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport, with more than 300 wounded; combined with Friday's first strike, it is the deadliest attack on Saudi Arabia in decades. The airport is closed through Saturday. Gulf Air, Etihad, Kuwait Airways and Delta have suspended or rerouted flights, and Osprey Flight Solutions warned that Gulf airports are becoming front-line targets in a widening regional war. Saudi Arabia's energy minister vowed a "serious response" and insisted Vision 2030 investment continues regardless - "we are like a phoenix" - while the Houthis told Sky News the strikes targeted an "air blockade" and warned that every Saudi airport is now a "legitimate Yemeni military target." Trump said he is weighing whether to join Saudi strikes against the group ("we may, we're gonna look at it"), even as he separately dismissed the Houthis as just "misbehaving very badly." There is no decisive military end in sight: Al Jazeera's Inside Story panel flagged Iran's offer to mediate as self-interested and warned Taiz faces renewed siege risk atop an already deep Yemeni humanitarian crisis.

The same day, a second war front came apart just as fast. Trump announced on social media that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate ceasefire on striking each other's energy infrastructure - "they agreed because I said they agreed" - but Zelensky said Kyiv learned of the claim only from media reports. Hours later Russia struck Ukrainian energy infrastructure in Kharkiv and Zhytomyr and hit a residential building in Kyiv, killing at least two. Russian foreign minister Lavrov rejected any pause outright, saying Moscow does not believe Putin "deserves a respite," and vowed to continue the "special military operation." The EU's Kaja Kallas answered by unveiling the bloc's largest-ever sanctions package: nearly 1,600 new listings, almost half tied to Russian ballistic missile production, explicitly rejecting any easing of pressure on Moscow even as Washington pushes the opposite way.

Energy is the thread running through both fronts. Trump is simultaneously defending a deal to import 300,000 to 500,000 tons of Russian diesel a month to bring US fuel prices down, despite a 2022 law barring Russian energy imports during the war; CNN's David Goldman calculated the volume at less than half of what America consumes in a single day, spread over a month. Congress members from both parties argue the deal may be illegal and directly contradicts sanctions Trump signed weeks earlier. Trump has shifted blame for high diesel prices onto Zelensky, citing Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries, and the US has reportedly warned it could cut intelligence sharing with Ukraine over the dispute. Sky's Ed Conway, reporting from the IMF's annual meeting in Bangkok, estimated the Russian diesel pledge "might only fuel American diesel demand for kind of 14 hours or so." Analyst Narendra Taneja argued Europe is "paying the price for being naive" on energy policy for 15 years, while Rystad's Jorge Leon noted OPEC+ "has no power in oil markets" given current constraints. Oil hit a near two-week high as the Saudi airport attacks compounded a diesel deal that was never going to move the market much anyway.

At the same Bangkok meeting, IMF officials flagged circular AI financing deals tied to roughly $1.4 trillion in future revenue commitments as a systemic risk, alongside cyber vulnerabilities and rising global bond yields, warning that "policy room is much more limited compared to past shocks" if an AI market correction hits the real economy. Three wars, one energy system, and the IMF saying there's almost no cushion left if any of it goes wrong at once.

US Politics

Homeland Security Investigations agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar's Washington-area home before dawn, 22 days before her midterm reelection, executing a sealed, judge-approved warrant tied to an alleged immigration and marriage fraud investigation; no charges have been filed. Omar called it "an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement," saying "for 10 years Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns ... I will not be silenced." JD Vance said the administration believes "Ilhan Omar definitely committed immigration fraud against the United States of America." Trump told reporters he has "always found them to be totally crooked" but left the matter to the DOJ; he separately drew accusations of racism for saying Omar "comes from Somalia, all they have is crime and squalor," remarks CNN panelists called racist outright. Democratic House leaders called the raid "deeply disturbing" and "the continued corrupt weaponization of the federal government against Donald Trump's adversaries." Minnesota state legislators rallied behind Omar in Minneapolis on Indigenous Peoples' Day.

A second scandal is closing in on the administration from a different angle. The Wall Street Journal reported leaked texts showing US ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle allegedly soliciting a $100,000 payment from Trump donor Eric Dieters for access to the administration, telling an associate not to "leave a paper trail." In leaked audio aired by CNN, Guilfoyle tells Dieters "I can deliver the world to you" and separately complains "you don't have the effing U.S. ambassador to Greece ... come. She should be kissing my effing ass." The State Department's inspector general has opened a formal investigation; Trump said he is "not happy" and is weighing firing her. Secretary of State Marco Rubio pushed back publicly on the reporting, and Guilfoyle's attorneys deny wrongdoing, framing the $100,000 as roughly $150,000 in outstanding consulting fees Dieters owed her rather than a bribe. Former senator Jeff Flake said he could not "imagine that she'll survive much longer"; Dieters called it "grifting on the highest level" and intends to sue her for defamation.

Trump spent the day in Youngstown, Ohio, rallying for Senate candidate John Husted and governor candidate Vivek Ramaswamy three weeks before the midterms, even as his own approval in the state sits at 36%, underwater by 28 points, per CNN polling. CNN's own early-voting data shows Republicans' 2024 lead of 30 points in counties Trump won by 20-plus points has shrunk to just five. Husted touted Ohio's 3.3% unemployment, the lowest since the 1970s, while attacking Sherrod Brown over taxes and manufacturing jobs lost to China; Trump pledged a $5,000 "Trump dividend" check to every adult citizen, funded by tariff revenue, if Republicans hold both chambers, and warned of a depression "the equivalent of 1929" if Democrats win instead. Rising diesel prices tied to his own Russia deal surfaced as a live concern even among Ohio supporters at the rally. The same bind - economic promises undercut by the diesel story - is shaping races in New York, Georgia, Minnesota and Texas, where Republican candidates Bruce Blakeman, Rick Jackson and Lisa Demuth are running on crime and tax messaging against Democratic incumbents, and Missouri's Supreme Court-blocked congressional map has reverted to 2024 lines, reshuffling some voters' districts weeks before the election.

Elon Musk has given a reported $366 million to Republican-aligned campaigns and super PACs this cycle, over $100 million of it to the Senate Leadership Fund alone - more than every Democratic donor combined gave their Senate super PAC. The spending contradicts his earlier stated plan to step back from politics; analysts tie the reversal partly to his reliance on federal contracts for SpaceX and Tesla, while Republican strategist Mark McKinnon argued the money faces steep diminishing returns because "earned beats paid."

Pennsylvania reported its sixth measles death in its worst outbreak in a generation - a 39-year-old unvaccinated woman with underlying conditions in Franklin County - making 2026 the deadliest US measles year since 1991, with national cases above 4,000. HHS Secretary RFK Jr. announced a vaccine-injury study the same week, saying "we must listen to patients and families who report vaccine injuries, not dismiss or gaslight them"; medical experts countered that "the scientific evidence says that getting vaccinated practically eliminates the risk of getting measles." In Pennsylvania's PA-8 House race, Fox polling found 71% of voters oppose local AI data center development, a backlash also playing out in Kenilworth, New Jersey, where residents are organizing against a $1.8 billion CoreWeave project over noise, water use and property values.

PM Andy Burnham confirmed a UK-EU summit for November 20 to finalize a sector-by-sector reset covering food and drink standards, carbon emissions trading, and a youth mobility scheme, telling MPs "sticking with the status quo is not good enough for Britain." He cited security threats from Iran and Russia as part of the justification, saying it is "highly likely" the alleged terror plot targeting RAF Fairford last month was "coordinated in Iran, almost certainly directed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard." Nigel Farage and the Daily Express accused him of betrayal - "we didn't fight to break free just to crawl back on our hands and knees" - while Burnham partially walked back earlier comments suggesting Russian interference in the Brexit referendum, maintaining only that Russian actors "sought to interfere" in the 2019 general election. He insists Labour's manifesto commitment not to rejoin the customs union or single market still stands. Separately, NATO opened its annual Steadfast Noon nuclear drills in Italy amid Russian threats over a perceived blockade of Kaliningrad, which NATO denies planning; the Kremlin reacted angrily to France's test of a new nuclear-capable ballistic missile, and expert Liviu Horovitz told DW that Moscow's rhetoric "may signal weakness more than confidence," though Trump's transactional approach to alliances has genuinely eroded allied confidence in the US nuclear umbrella.

Austerity unrest is spreading across the continent. Thousands protested in Brussels over housing costs, education funding and spending cuts as Belgium seeks billions in savings to meet EU fiscal rules; one pensioner told Al Jazeera "my pension hasn't changed, but prices have jumped." In Paris's low-income suburbs, students centered on Saint-Denis have sustained nearly a month of protests over teacher shortages and school conditions, now the largest French student movement in decades; one student said "we're not forgotten, we're just abandoned. No one helps us." Economists point to AI-driven labor disruption, Iran-war energy shocks and aging populations as the compounding pressure behind both movements.

DW's investigative documentary aired testimony from two anonymous defectors inside Iran's security apparatus describing a secret cell, "Dahmeh," that plots killings and abductions of regime opponents outside formal government channels "in the interest of the Supreme Leader." Protester Khosar Eftekari testified to being blinded by a Revolutionary Guards officer during the 2022 Mahsa Amini protests. Nearby, Kurdish forces are fighting a surging amphetamine and crystal meth trade moving from Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan toward European demand markets; Sky News documented seizures worth millions of dollars, including shipments reportedly bound for the UK. Nobel Peace Prize winner Navi Pillay, a former ICC judge, condemned new US sanctions on the ICC - imposed the same day her award was announced - as unlawful retaliation against judicial independence, calling the timing a "total surprise." In Nepal, flash floods and a landslide destroyed a bridge and buildings in a popular trekking area; more than 300 people have been rescued but roughly 100 foreign trekkers remain stranded and five are missing, a smaller toll than an earlier flood that killed 1,400 in the country this year.

A cyberattack on refrigeration control software pushed fridge temperatures to roughly 50°C across hundreds of French supermarkets including Carrefour, Auchan and Intermarché, spoiling food and sparking fires; an analyst called it "a global wake-up call" about internet-connected infrastructure. Anthropic updated its usage policy to ban abusive treatment of its Claude chatbot following Pope Leo's warnings that AI systems "are not human," while Microsoft's Satya Nadella called for a human-controlled AI "kill switch." NASA's Perseverance rover collected a "leopard-spotted" rock from a Martian valley more than 3 billion years old that could show signs of ancient life, though the canceled Mars Sample Return Program means confirmation may never come. Pope Leo, 71, was admitted to Rome's Gemelli Hospital for surgery on an early-stage lung nodule; doctors say 95% of such nodules are benign and his November Latin America trip should be unaffected.

Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida as a Category 2 storm with gusts over 110 mph, killing at least four and cutting power to roughly 100,000 across Florida, Alabama and Georgia; it spawned 22 tornadoes. Florida's DeSantis reported over 70% of power restored after 402 response missions. Tropical Storm Rachel's remnants flooded Las Vegas and tore up the Long Beach, California boardwalk; no deaths reported, but eight buildings with 13 residents remain red-tagged after three major storms in six weeks.

A rider died and several were injured falling from the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia after a lap restraint apparently failed; the chain closed similar rides pending investigation. A man died after apparently entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster; conservationist Ron McGill said the tiger "was simply being a tiger."

Newly released 911 recordings showed chaos after Tennessee's botched lethal injection of Christa Pike, who survived two doses of pentobarbital; she has been returned to prison and it is unclear whether a third attempt will follow. Dwayne Davis, "Keffe D," faces sentencing of 40 years to life for the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur, with attorneys still disputing which Nevada statute applies; analysts expect him to die in state prison regardless. Russell Brand's rape and sexual assault trial opened jury selection in London; he denies three counts of rape, three of sexual assault and one of indecent assault from six women. Actress Selma Blair was arrested and hospitalized after an alleged assault aboard a Delta flight, attributed by her representatives to a multiple sclerosis-related medical emergency; she posted roughly $20,000 bail. Diddy was reportedly rushed to hospital from federal custody for a head injury before being returned to prison, per TMZ, following NBC's earlier reporting that he has been held in solitary confinement. ICE shot and wounded 28-year-old Oscar Belgal in the Bronx while his five-year-old son was in the car, with a bullet still lodged in his neck; separately an ICE vehicle in Houston struck and broke the leg of Miguel Parra Hernandez during an operation targeting a different man, prompting a racial-profiling claim from his attorney and weekend protests.
