7,805 is where the S&P 500 closed, down 0.02% and about 0.2% off its October 6 record. The Dow fell 0.35%; the Nasdaq lost 0.15%. Traders are frozen ahead of September CPI, forecast up 0.6% on the month and 3.6% on the year against August's 3.4%; markets price a 77-80% chance the Fed holds in October, and a further hike in December looks likely. New York Fed President Williams sees one more 2026 hike and none in 2027.

5.5% is how far South Korea's KOSPI fell after China's CXMT reported progress on a competing, more efficient memory-chip design. Micron, SK Hynix, Western Digital, Seagate and SanDisk all dropped in sympathy. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan piled on, comparing AI investor sentiment to a casino: "a lot of investors have no clue what they're investing in." The line triggered a broader chip selloff on top of the CXMT scare.

0.9% is how far JPMorgan fell after missing profit expectations; fixed-income trading revenue dropped 4%, its first decline in two years, though the bank raised its 2026 net interest income guidance. Wells Fargo fell 3%. Goldman Sachs edged down just 0.2% despite beating sharply elsewhere: equities trading revenue rose 72% year-over-year and investment banking revenue was strong. The KBW bank index closed down 1.1%. Earnings season has opened mixed.

$94.70 is where WTI sits, up 0.6%; Brent climbed to $107 after the Houthis struck a Saudi Aramco building in Dhahran. Iranian attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz added to the supply fear; rising Russian diesel exports under the Trump-Putin deal capped further gains. The dollar index slid 0.4% to 102.1 from an 18-month high as oil firmed and traders reassessed the AI rally; the 10-year Treasury yield eased to 5.2% from a multi-decade high of 5.36%. EUR/USD gained 0.05% to $1.12, bouncing off a 17-month low of 1.1153 on ECB President Lagarde's hawkish tone on acting early against inflation; French fiscal worries capped the upside.

$83,670 is where Bitcoin trades, up 0.7% and recovering from lows near $80,000; a break above $84,254 opens the way toward $85,000, while a drop below $82,500 raises the downside risk. The IMF's Global Financial Stability Report, delivered at its Bangkok annual meetings, flagged roughly $650 billion in circular AI equity financing tied to $1.4 trillion in future revenue commitments as a growing vulnerability; officials warned that if the AI investment boom turns out to be a bubble, global growth could fall to its weakest pace since COVID and the 2008 crisis. The Fund still upgraded its global growth forecast to roughly 3.1-3.4% and the UK's from 1% to 1.3%, crediting AI investment and a smaller-than-feared hit from the Strait of Hormuz disruption. Meta, meanwhile, unveiled a new AI model, "Muse Wonder," pitched as frontier-competitive using existing compute rather than new capital. It is a direct jab at the capex arms race driving the chip selloff.

The Big Story

13 to 20 people are dead and over 300 injured after Houthi missiles struck Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport. The airport faces an extended closure and mass flight cancellations. Saudi Arabia's energy minister vowed a "serious response." The Saudi-led coalition retaliated within hours with airstrikes on Houthi oil facilities in Hodeidah and Sana'a. Yemen's internationally recognized government said its Saudi-backed "Dawn of Yemen" ground operation to retake Houthi territory was advancing.

The Houthis escalated the threat directly: they warned Saudi civilians near any Aramco facility that they are now "legitimate targets." Saudi Arabia says it intercepted missiles aimed at both Riyadh and an Aramco site in Dhahran; that strike on the Dhahran building is what pushed Brent to $107 overnight. A senior Houthi spokesman told Sky News the group bears no responsibility for civilian deaths and claimed prior warning had been given. UK defence minister Luke Pollard rejected that outright on air. He told the spokesman: "you are responsible if you fire a missile at a civilian target."

Trump said the US "may" join Saudi strikes against the Houthis. He declined to confirm a decision even as reporters pressed him on whether his Ohio and Alaska campaign stops were distracting from the crisis. That ambiguity is itself the story: three weeks from the midterms, a Gulf war that could pull in US forces is competing for Trump's attention against a domestic polling slide, and he has given no timeline for resolving either.

The humanitarian toll is worsening away from the cameras. The UN warns the besieged city of Taiz could run out of wheat and flour within three weeks. Djibouti's refugee camps are straining under a surge of Yemenis fleeing the fighting. Bloomberg's coverage tracked the crisis mainly as an energy-security story. It flagged Delta's delayed Atlanta-Riyadh route launch and the risk that a wider Gulf conflict disrupts tanker traffic. Al Jazeera's Inside Story panel framed Saudi Arabia as "caught between Iraq and a hard place," with diplomacy through Qatar or Oman the only realistic de-escalation path on the table. No ceasefire, no US decision, and an oil market already pricing in more.

US Politics

Federal agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar's Washington home before dawn, three weeks before the midterms. They executed a sealed, court-approved warrant tied to a years-long immigration and naturalization fraud investigation. Omar called it "an outrageous abuse of power," an attempt "to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement." Trump denied advance knowledge of the raid but called her "totally crooked personally." He revived years-old attacks on her Somali heritage: "she comes from Somalia, all they have is crime and squalor." Vice President JD Vance said the administration believes Omar "definitely committed immigration fraud." No charges have been filed. The timing is the legal story here: the raid breaks the Department of Justice's informal 60-90 day pre-election blackout on actions against sitting members of Congress, a norm CNN's Elie Honig and DW's Ethan Behrman both flagged as "deeply suspicious" given the proximity to Election Day.

Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned as US Ambassador to Greece after the White House formally asked her to step down. The resignation follows a Wall Street Journal report that she solicited roughly $100,000 from Trump donor Eric Dieters to cover a personal American Express bill in exchange for access to administration officials. Dieters told CNN it was "grifting on the highest level." He alleged her texts repeatedly warned him not to "leave a paper trail." Trump distanced himself publicly and downplayed her past engagement to Don Jr.: "she wasn't a member of my family... we didn't like what we were reading." Guilfoyle denies wrongdoing and says she will "vigorously defend my name, my reputation and my integrity." A State Department Inspector General investigation is ongoing.

Both scandals land inside a midterm map that keeps expanding against Republicans. Trump's approval sits near 38%, with Democrats holding a nine-point generic-ballot lead; NBC's Steve Kornacki called it "a dangerous place for an incumbent president to be." Trump campaigned through Ohio, Alaska, Georgia, Texas, Montana and Arizona, all states he carried comfortably in 2024, and that is the tell that the battlefield has shifted. In Ohio, Senate and governor candidates John Husted and Vivek Ramaswamy face unexpectedly tight races against Sherrod Brown and Amy Acton; anger over diesel and gas prices is partly to blame. In Alaska, Dan Sullivan's race against Mary Peltola has tightened sharply despite a $50.1 billion Alaska LNG pipeline deal Trump announced with South Korea and his pardon of three local truckers at a Wasilla rally. In Texas, JD Vance campaigned for Ken Paxton against Democrat James Talarico in a race now within the margin of error. Elon Musk has become the single largest known midterm donor. He has given over $276 million since July to Republican-aligned PACs, a figure analysts tie partly to protecting his federal contracts from potential Democratic oversight.

Those diesel prices have a direct cause: Trump's deal to import rising volumes of Russian diesel, 300,000 tons this month, 500,000 next, over 1 million tons going forward, explicitly meant to cut fuel prices before November. Bipartisan backlash is building. Senator Susan Collins and several House Republicans, including a co-sponsor of the Russia sanctions law Trump signed weeks earlier, are calling for the deal's reversal. They argue it violates the 2022 congressional ban on Russian energy imports. Trump insists the deal benefits "the world market," not Russia specifically: "the world market suffered with high prices." Poland's Donald Tusk and Sweden's Ulf Kristersson both criticized the arrangement as a financial lifeline for Putin's war chest, a charge that lands awkwardly alongside the EU's largest-ever Russia sanctions package.

World

Trump claimed Russia and Ukraine agreed to an energy-infrastructure ceasefire; both the Kremlin and Kyiv denied formally agreeing to anything. Zelensky's line, "they agreed because I said they agreed," captured the gap. Within hours a Russian drone and missile strike killed at least two people in Kyiv and hit a Kharkiv thermal plant; Zelensky said Ukraine halted strikes on Russian energy sites for two days but accused Moscow of continuing attacks regardless. Drones struck two cargo ships off Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. One sank; 11 sailors are missing. Bulgaria's prime minister and the EU's Ursula von der Leyen both implicated Russia and called it a new front in the war. The EU responded with roughly 1,600 new sanctions listings aimed at Russia's military-industrial complex, its largest expansion yet. DW analyst Phillips O'Brien told the network the ceasefire "was made up in Donald Trump's mind." UK PM Andy Burnham hosted Zelensky in Downing Street and pledged accelerated missile deliveries and a £1.6 billion aid package.

Burnham separately told Parliament it is "highly likely" that a terror plot aimed at RAF Fairford, the airbase used by US warplanes during strikes on Iran, was "almost certainly directed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard." The UK sanctioned two Iranians, including an IRGC counter-espionage official, and summoned Iran's ambassador. More than 30 allied nations backed the attribution in a joint statement. The response drew comparisons to the UK's 2018 Salisbury poisoning case. The timing lines up with MI5 director Ken McCallum's annual threat assessment: over 50 Iran-linked arrests in the UK in the past year, a state-threats caseload that has quadrupled in a decade, and a warning that AI is "already supercharging the cybersecurity contest between attackers and defenders." McCallum named AI-enabled bioweapon risk as the misuse case he weighs most heavily. The Russian Embassy in London rejected both the RAF Fairford attribution and McCallum's warning. It accused the UK of inflating threat narratives to justify militarization.

160,000 students and teachers marched in France for a fifth straight week. They are demanding roughly €10 billion in new education investment for underfunded, dilapidated schools. Greta Thunberg joined the Paris protests and told the crowd: "this generation is one that has been growing up with a sense of hopelessness for the future." Police used tear gas and water cannon; France's Justice Ministry says almost 7,000 people, mostly minors, have been detained since the movement began. The government says it cannot meet the funding demand. The IMF downgraded France's 2026 growth forecast to just 0.4%, among the weakest in the G7, and the unrest is now entangled with France's 2027 presidential race.

The UK government will remove the "average earnings" element of the state pension triple lock, projected to save roughly £15 billion by decade's end to fund a new national care service. The opposition calls it a stealth cut that creates a £15bn "black hole." But several Conservative figures have previously called the triple lock unsustainable.
