Bend school shooting, Brent $109.86, Nasdaq -4.5%
Markets

26,140.03 is where the Nasdaq Composite closed Friday, down 2.1% on the day and 4.5% on the week, its worst week since June. The S&P 500 fell 1.1% to 7,659.44 and the Dow slipped 0.3%; both major indexes closed below their 50-day moving averages. AI names did the damage. CoreWeave sank 12% as its credit default swaps hit distressed levels and its bonds traded at levels typically associated with companies headed for trouble, despite Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang insisting on camera that the company's finances are "improving every day." Micron fell 5.6%, Intel 5.8%, and the semiconductor ETF (SOXX) dropped 4%; the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has now fallen for eight straight sessions, its longest losing streak since 2008. Meta dropped nearly 4% and Nvidia slipped 1.5%; Apple was the only Magnificent Seven stock to gain. The Nasdaq 100 posted its worst week since roughly April 2005. Three of CoreWeave's four co-founders have sold $3.3 billion in stock since the 2024 IPO, $2.4 billion of it this year alone. The timing against the credit stress has drawn fresh scrutiny. Bank of England officials and the IMF have both flagged AI-linked market exposure as a financial-stability risk; AI critic Ed Zitron spent a widely shared interview predicting a crash that "rivals the dot-com bubble, but without any of the recovery at the end." The VIX agreed with him for a day, jumping more than four points above 21, its highest since June.

$109.86 is where Brent settled, up 3.7% and the highest since May; WTI rose 3.5% to $101.41 and is up 10% on the week even after Washington released another 17 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The driver is a second unclaimed tanker sinking near the Strait of Hormuz in 24 hours, Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries, and Russian retaliation against Ukrainian power infrastructure. Exxon and Chevron executives warned spare global capacity has thinned to the point where markets are newly exposed to shocks; Exxon expects a multi-billion-dollar refining-margin boost from the expensive diesel environment it's also selling into. September CPI ran at 3.7% and PPI at 6.3%, the hottest wholesale print in four years, energy-driven. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, in Bangkok, declined to signal the October decision, and odds of an October hike fell to about 17% from 28%; December hike odds still sit near 89%. The 10-year yield closed near 5.10% after peaking at 5.33% on the CPI print. Bitcoin dipped below $80,000 Thursday, recovered to roughly $82,500, then faded to about $81,400, down 1.6% on the week on spot-ETF outflows and rate anxiety, even as whales kept buying the dip. The dollar index fell 0.3% to 101.8, its first weekly decline in five weeks, as rate-hike odds eased; euro-dollar rose to roughly 1.12 after touching a 17-month low near 1.111, capped by French debt worries. Gold added 0.5% to $4,190. Elsewhere, Tesla's SpaceX-thruster Roadster stunt pushed the stock higher on Dan Ives's merger speculation, even as engineers called the vehicle a halo product rather than a sales driver; FIFA's $4.2 billion World Cup investor-stake plan is dead after Gianni Infantino apologized to his own council.

The Big Story
Three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher, Megan Lambert, are dead after a 16-year-old gunman shot through locked doors to force his way into Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. A seven-year-old and a second teacher remain critically injured. The shooter, later named Griffin J. John II, was inside the building roughly three minutes before an armed community member, Caleb Giamanko, pursued him and shot him dead; a teacher in the room had already thrown her phone at him and tackled him, buying the time that mattered. Two law enforcement officials told NBC the shotgun was likely bought by the shooter's mother in August, near his birthday. Investigators are now working through his online activity, his devices and his family's mental-health history.

The response split cleanly along familiar lines. Governor Tina Kotek and local officials thanked the bystander at a press conference; a vigil followed that evening at Drake Park. Trump praised Giamanko as "a great hero" who "took care of business" and said nothing about gun policy. Democratic Reps. Janelle Bynum and Suzanne Bonamici renewed calls for gun-violence legislation. CNN carried the sharpest version of the counter-argument, interviewing Parkland victim's father Manny Oliver and a commentator who noted flatly: "That gun was unlocked. It was not in a safe place... that a 16-year-old had access to a gun. That is exactly what happened." Fox News ran the opposite frame, interviewing the National Association of School Resource Officers on lockdown procedure and crediting the armed-response model.

36 is CNN's count of K-12 shootings on US school grounds this year; DW and Al Jazeera cited the Gun Violence Archive's figure of more than 360 mass shootings nationally in 2026; Sky News put US school-gunfire incidents this year at over 100, with 33 deaths before Bend. Seventeen days from the midterms, the shooting lands directly on top of an electorate already anxious about affordability and safety, and neither party's framing moved an inch from where it stood the last time this happened.

US Politics
Katie Zachariah is out as White House press secretary after five days, the shortest tenure of the role in memory, following a widely panned 14-minute debut briefing and a CNN K-File investigation that found 15 social-media posts over two years in which she described herself as an attorney despite never passing the California bar after Pepperdine Law School in 2011. Her defense drew a distinction between "lawyer" and "attorney-at-law" and cited "legal analysis, not legal advice"; the watchdog group Campaign for Accountability has filed a bar complaint. Trump denied firing her, saying he told her to "reconsider" given hostile coverage, and called the treatment unfair. The episode compounds separate, Trump-denied reports that chief of staff Susie Wiles is being pushed out, and follows the earlier Kimberly Guilfoyle resignation as ambassador to Greece over allegations she demanded $100,000 from a donor for access to officials; Guilfoyle denies wrongdoing and suggests the text evidence against her may be AI-generated, while Trump has claimed he barely knew her.

Seventeen days out, the midterm map is being redrawn by gas prices. In Iowa, Democrat Josh Turek is campaigning on a "second farm crisis" as diesel hits an all-time high and gas has risen more than in almost any other state; in Alaska, Dan Sullivan faces a tighter-than-expected race against Mary Peltola on the same fuel-cost pressure. In Georgia, Ossoff outraised Mike Collins roughly $33 million to under $3 million in the third quarter, a gap Republicans themselves are reading as conceding the Senate seat to focus on the governor's race; the debate there turned on dueling Epstein-files attacks. In Michigan, JD Vance called Abdul El-Sayed a "little weasel," Trump called him "a Muslim Brotherhood guy, 100 percent," and AOC pledged $1 million of her own campaign money to Michigan Democrats. In Texas, James Talarico's $64 million third-quarter haul (more than triple Ken Paxton's) and a tied Marist poll have Democrats calling the seat winnable for the first time since 2018, even as Elon Musk has funneled $150-178 million into PACs backing Paxton. In Maine, Susan Collins is outperforming Troy Jackson across four debates by leaning on experience against his populist attack that she votes with Trump 96% of the time, a figure she disputes at 72%.

Away from the trail, federal investigators searched Rep. Ilhan Omar's Washington home over a citizenship-fraud allegation the Washington Post reports was already reviewed and dismissed for insufficient evidence during Trump's first term; a judge required a legislative-materials firewall before signing the warrant. Dozens of letters with an unidentified, preliminarily non-hazardous white powder hit election offices in at least 15 states and senators including Chuck Schumer, Chris Coons, Chris Murphy and Alex Padilla, with no suspect identified three weeks before the vote. And Trump personally overruled Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's plan to livestream Nidal Hassan's firing-squad execution for the Fort Hood shooting, after learning Hassan is now paralyzed; the execution proceeds as scheduled, unbroadcast, after bipartisan objections reportedly including JD Vance and Marco Rubio.

World
Zelensky has declared Trump's energy-ceasefire dead after Russia kept striking Ukrainian power plants; Ukraine resumed long-range hits on Russian refineries, including near Ryazan. A roughly day-long throttling of Ukraine's Starlink access degraded its drone-interception capability, with the White House and Musk both denying responsibility and a Reuters report pointing at the US government itself. Trump has escalated against Zelensky directly, calling him "more difficult to deal with than Putin" and the refinery strikes "a disgrace." The rhetoric is widely tied to his own US-Russia diesel deal, which Zelensky calls "inappropriate" since Kyiv wasn't consulted. In Brussels, Ursula von der Leyen pledged a 22nd sanctions package and a winter aid plan, though the EU's roughly €50 billion offer falls well short of Zelensky's €70-79 billion ask; Ukraine says it has run out of US-made Patriot interceptors heading into winter, with stockpiles diverted toward the Middle East.

That Middle East front is widening. A Houthi missile strike on the presidential palace in Aden killed five; Riyadh's main airport has been hit 20 times in 11 days, part of a campaign the Saudi-led coalition says has killed 17 and wounded 300-plus. The WFP says 800,000 Yemenis, concentrated in a besieged Taiz, have lost access to aid, with 200,000 newly displaced since September. The USS George Washington carrier group is escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, where a second cargo ship sank in 24 hours; Trump is weighing a 21,000-pound MOAB strike on Iranian nuclear sites, ruling out nuclear weapons and ground troops and signaling nothing before November 3. Bloomberg Economics estimates the war has already cut Gulf states' combined current-account surpluses by roughly two-thirds, about $70 billion, with Bahrain now the world's fourth most indebted government.

In Ethiopia, federal forces have taken Aksum and several other Tigray cities from TPLF-aligned fighters; a pro-government Tigray group claims Eritrean troops operating there took heavy losses and retreated, a claim Eritrea denies, with the risk now a widening Ethiopia-Eritrea war over Abiy Ahmed's reported ambitions for Red Sea port access. In Tirana, student-led protests over a Kushner-linked coastal resort entered a fourth day of tear gas and water cannon, with PM Edi Rama refusing to resign and blaming "foreign hands." In Delhi, police arrested the founder of the "Cockroach Movement" and used barricades and detention buses against protesters demanding the resignation of India's chief election commissioner over an alleged voter-roll purge. And in Peshawar, Pakistan, the death toll from Monday's school roof collapse has passed 33, mostly children aged 7 to 13, with one arrest made and building-code enforcement under fresh fire.

Six Flags Over Georgia reopened with the Goliath coaster still closed after Hassan Kareem's fatal ejection; a CNN investigation found a pattern of injuries and maintenance issues across the chain, and nine similar coasters have been closed nationwide as a precaution.
