France curfews five cities, 2,500 arrests, Brent $111.99
Markets

52,495.88 is where the Dow closed, up 1.02% on a rotation into defensives; the S&P 500 added a thinner 0.28% to 7,712.57, the Nasdaq slipped 0.02%, and the Russell 2000 jumped 1.7%. 3M gained nearly 6% on strong earnings and raised guidance; GM fell about 7% and GE Aerospace dropped 3.5%, both after reporting. AI financing drove as much of the split as earnings did: Korean data-center firm Elice fell more than 30% on its stock-market debut, a fresh hit to confidence in how AI infrastructure gets funded, and CoreWeave extended a multi-day slide after an HSBC downgrade flagged debt-financing risk and slowing large-language-model revenue growth. SpaceX posted its first quarterly profit at $4.4 billion against that; AI compute revenue hit $7.5 billion and Starlink is now at 13.6 million subscribers. Elon Musk used the moment to pledge one SpaceX share, worth roughly $150 and about $10.7-11 billion in total, to every American child; Anthropic pledged at least 5% of its equity to a new public-benefit fund. Nscale and Anthropic are reportedly negotiating a second compute deal worth roughly $45 billion, which would bring their combined agreement to about $90 billion. Netflix missed Q4 revenue guidance and announced layoffs amid a leadership shake-up. Reuters reported OpenAI is nearing a $30 billion raise at a $1.4 trillion valuation, a race to beat Anthropic to a public debut.

$82,731 is where Bitcoin sits, down 0.25% after failing again at the $83,000 wall of sell orders; closes since October 13 have held a tight $81,400-$83,100 range, with the 50-day average near $81,500 acting as support. Money flowed into US spot Bitcoin ETFs on Monday, led by BlackRock's IBIT in its strongest single day in nearly a month; whales reportedly added bitcoin in October near $80,000.

$98.88 is where WTI crude landed, up 1.08%, with Brent topping $110 after touching a five-month high of $111.99 on Tuesday; supertanker attacks, continued strikes in the Strait of Hormuz, and Houthi missile fire on Saudi sites drove the spike. Oil then fell about 2% on Tuesday on reports of a Qatar-Pakistan compromise plan between the US and Iran, though a diplomat said claims a deal is close are inaccurate; expect more whipsaw. Diesel is up more than 70% year over year, and that's why Trump unveiled an $8 billion harvest fuel relief program two weeks before the midterms. Saudi Arabia postponed its flagship FII investment summit ("Davos in the Desert") to 2027 after Houthi strikes forced partial closures at Riyadh's main airport; last year's edition drew more than $50 billion in announced deals.

The euro is down 0.14% and sliding toward 1.12 after a five-week slide tied to French fiscal turmoil, weak German ZEW sentiment, and high energy costs; 1.11 and 1.10 are the next downside targets. The 10-year Treasury yield hovers near 5.1%, with traders keeping a Fed hike in play for the October 27-28 meeting and for December; hot CPI and PPI readings, plus elevated oil, are limiting relief for risk assets.

The Big Story
Nightly curfews are now in force across Paris, Nice, Bordeaux, Lyon and Marseille after the worst rioting France has seen in years. More than 2,500 people have been arrested and thousands of businesses damaged nationwide. A historic 1883 town hall in Limoges burned down. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez admitted police "lost control" in several cities and offered his resignation; Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu asked him to stay and ordered a review of planning and intelligence failures.

President Emmanuel Macron was touring the Gulf, Kuwait, the UAE, Bahrain and Qatar, while Lecornu managed the crisis at home; Sky News called it the air of "abandoning a burning house." French officials insist the unrest is rooted in cost-of-living pressure and education-funding grievances, not immigration. Trump disagrees, loudly and publicly: he blamed the riots on migration, said he had warned Macron to "close your borders," and told a rally France risks becoming "a once great nation that is being conquered... by migrants, jihadists and communists." He has folded the images into his own midterm closing argument on the other side of the Atlantic. French police have not linked the unrest to immigration.

Politics at home are moving fast. Far-right leader Marine Le Pen's party is calling for early elections, and a further nationwide mobilization, including a Yellow Vests march, is planned for Saturday. The economic fallout is already visible in markets: Bloomberg put business damage at roughly €1.5 billion and flagged widening France-Germany bond spreads, with Citi's Giada Giani warning of bond-market fragility lasting "until spring of 2027." Al Jazeera aired extensive interviews with student unions defending the protests and drew an explicit parallel between French riot-control tactics and those used against Palestinians. One thread runs across every channel: a president absent from a crisis now reshaping his own country's politics, his bond market and, via Trump, someone else's election too.

US Politics
About 31% is where Trump's approval now sits, a second-term low, and it's why he spent the day campaigning in Kansas, Texas and North Carolina, three states Republicans normally don't have to defend. NBC's poll found Democrats with a generic-ballot lead and a clear enthusiasm gap; Republican-aligned groups have already pulled ad money out of North Carolina and redirected it to defend Kansas, a tacit admission that even deep-red turf is now contested. In Wichita, Trump used the anti-Semitic slur "Shylock" while defending Senator Roger Marshall's record of suing patients over medical debt; condemnation was immediate. He also repeated a pledge, verbatim, at both the Kansas and North Carolina stops: a $5,000 "dividend" to every adult citizen if Republicans hold Congress, funded by tariff revenue, with no mechanism beyond that. He paired it with a warning that a Democratic win would bring "a 1929 style economic depression."

Money is pouring into Texas specifically. Elon Musk has put more than $150 million behind Ken Paxton's Senate bid against Democrat James Talarico; Talarico accuses him of trying to "buy Texas." A University of Houston poll has Talarico at 48% to Paxton's 46%, among the tightest Senate races in the country, with record first-day early turnout in Harris and Dallas counties. If Talarico wins, he would be the first Democrat elected to a Texas Senate seat in more than three decades.

Trump's $8 billion harvest fuel relief program, announced two weeks before the vote, lands alongside another closing-argument move: a new DOJ "Fraud Whistleblower Incentive Program," unveiled with JD Vance and citizen journalist Nick Shirley, offering a 1% commission for reporting government fraud via fraud.gov. The announcement leaned on a Minnesota childcare and autism-services fraud case Shirley's reporting exposed, and Trump used the same platform to call for Rep. Ilhan Omar's deportation or imprisonment. Florida's attorney general issued a no-bond warrant for 95-year-old former Cuban leader Raul Castro over a 1996 plane shoot-down, timed to the start of Florida's early voting; the state's own AG conceded Castro is "probably not looking to march himself into Miami." Separately, video surfaced of ICE agents using a taser on a Long Beach man who says he's a US citizen. Mississippi ruled an officer's fatal shooting of one-year-old Kohen Wiley justified, despite an autopsy the family's attorney says contradicts the official account; opposition campaigns are using both against Republicans in the campaign's final stretch.

World
Trump is pressing Volodymyr Zelensky to "make a deal" and has floated replacing him as Ukraine's chief negotiator, telling a rally Zelensky isn't "helping matters." He has also eased sanctions on Russian oil to push down US gas prices, a move that drew criticism from Zelensky and some Republicans who want continued pressure on Putin. The Kremlin floated a Trump-Xi-Putin summit on the war that would exclude Ukraine; Trump signaled openness. Zelensky accused Washington of briefly withholding early-warning intelligence on Russian missile strikes and restricting Starlink access; Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied any deliberate policy shift. Envoy Steve Witkoff met Zelensky and Nordic leaders in Oslo before heading to Moscow with new proposals for Putin. Russian strikes killed civilians in Kharkiv and Kyiv, including a one-year-old and her mother; Ukraine hit Russian oil refineries and Black Sea shipping in response.

The USS George Washington carrier group conducted a major mid-ocean resupply to sustain the US blockade on Iranian-linked shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, where attacks on vessels have sharply escalated: 23 in the first two weeks of October alone, more than all of September, increasingly by missile rather than drone. Iran's IRGC has warned of turning the Gulf into a "graveyard" for ships if struck again; the US 5th Fleet's Bahrain base is reported damaged and largely unusable, and the carrier group has been pushed further offshore. Trump says the US won't strike Iran before the midterms but insists Iran's navy and air force have been "wiped out." The spillover is regional: a Houthi ballistic missile killed 73 Yemeni recruits in Shabwa province, Saudi forces intercepted a separate missile aimed at Riyadh, and the UK will deploy RAF Typhoon jets on defensive-only patrols to help protect Saudi airspace. In Taiz, food prices have risen roughly fivefold under blockade. In Britain, counterterrorism police rearrested two men and said for the first time it is "highly likely" Iran's state intelligence service was behind last month's incident near RAF Fairford, the base used by US B-1 bombers striking Iran.

Israel heads into an election a week away that amounts to a referendum on Netanyahu's 18-year dominance; former armed forces chief Gadi Eisenkot is his strongest challenger, running to Netanyahu's right on Iran. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made an unannounced visit to Netanyahu days after Trump endorsed his re-election, while VP JD Vance declined to endorse him, saying he only backs American candidates.

In Gaza, the World Food Programme is halving food aid to roughly 500,000 Palestinians, cutting total recipients from 1.6 million to 1.1 million; officials stress the cut is driven by donor funding shortfalls, not reduced need. Near-daily Israeli strikes continue more than a year into the ceasefire, with more than 1,500 Palestinians reportedly killed by Israeli fire since it took effect.

Albertans voted 76% to stay in Canada in a non-binding independence referendum, a political win for PM Mark Carney as he manages Trump's trade war; Premier Danielle Smith accepted the result and pledged to keep building the province's energy sector within Canada. In Kenya, a court convicted preacher Paul Mackenzie and 28 followers of murdering 191 people, nearly all children, who were starved in the Shakahola forest after being told fasting would let them "meet Jesus"; the broader tragedy is linked to more than 400 deaths, with body recovery ongoing and an appeal planned. In Australia, independent MP Helen Haines lost a leg after being deliberately rammed by a car driven by a 20-year family friend; PM Anthony Albanese called it a deliberate act and warned the country "has become too polarized," a framing UK politicians echoed by comparing it to the murders of MPs Jo Cox and David Amess. Sudan's army is accused of drone strikes that killed roughly 153 people in the disputed Abyei border region and around 150 more the previous day in West Kordofan, an intensifying campaign in the war against the RSF paramilitary. In Serbia, student activists in Bor are fighting toxic pollution and alleged corruption tied to the Chinese-owned Zijin Mining copper operation; environmental testing found airborne particles under 74 micrometers near the mine, fine enough to bypass the lungs' natural filtration.

The Tampa Bay Rays beat Cleveland 7-3 to clinch the AL pennant and will face the Milwaukee Brewers, who swept the Dodgers, in a World Series guaranteed to crown a first-time champion; Game 1 is Friday in Milwaukee. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will likely miss the rest of the season after a leg blood clot progressed into both lungs; he had been cleared to play in London after the clot was initially called "superficial."

FIFA faces a 42-question letter from UEFA over Gianni Infantino's aborted plan to sell World Cup commercial rights to Josh Kushner's Thrive Capital without informing the Council; he has apologized for how it was communicated. The UK approved the Jackdaw North Sea gas field, ending two years of legal limbo, with the Rosebank oil field expected to follow; unions backed the move on jobs grounds, Greenpeace objected on emissions. The captain of a FlyDubai flight bound for Tel Aviv described surviving a mid-air struggle after his first officer tried to seize the controls and crash the plane; the aircraft diverted for an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, with everyone surviving.

Disasters & crime
A grass fire during live-fire training at CFB Wainwright in Alberta killed four Canadian service members and injured dozens after winds shifted suddenly; PM Carney called it one of the military's worst peacetime tragedies. A driver struck a crowd at a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, killing six-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schaeffer and injuring ten others; the driver was released pending toxicology results. Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola case since the DRC outbreak began, in a patient who had traveled from Uganda; the wider outbreak has killed thousands of people. A UK public inquiry found the government's claimed "protective ring" around care homes was unfounded, with 43,000 care home deaths during the pandemic.

Mississippi's attorney general ruled an officer's fatal shooting of one-year-old Kohen Wiley justified; the family's attorney cites an autopsy showing the child was shot from the side, not the front as officers claimed, and wants body-camera footage released. A fourth and fifth accuser gave graphic testimony at Russell Brand's rape trial in London; he denies all seven charges. Israeli police arrested ten suspects over a settler attack on a Washington Post journalist and European diplomats in the West Bank, though such arrests have historically rarely led to charges. A Nottingham police officer was shot and injured; a 27-year-old woman faces firearms charges. A Google Cloud fault, not a cyberattack, disrupted Revolut, HSBC, Lloyds, Royal Mail and NHS England services across Europe. A review found three in five Jewish students in English schools have experienced anti-Semitism, mostly unreported.
