Shaybah and Dammam strikes kill 3, gas at $4.63
Markets

$97.15 is where WTI settled on Wednesday, down 0.7%, after trading near $99, and Brent settled at $108.82 after pushing near $110. The trigger is a Houthi drone strike on Aramco's Shaybah field; it adds to a campaign that has already forced Washington to pull non-essential diplomats out of Saudi Arabia. Goldman has an upside case of $125 Brent in December if shipping attacks intensify. StoneX flags technical fatigue underneath the rally: high-volume dojis and bearish RSI divergence on both WTI and Brent after a 15-18% two-week run. A 3.06-million-barrel US crude draw gave support, and Gulf exports are creeping back toward pre-war levels. The oil story is a real supply shock riding on top of a stretched trade.

Equities had a good day despite the energy jitters. The S&P 500 gained 0.58% to 7,757.17, the Nasdaq rose 1.05% to 26,702.86 and the Dow added 0.69% to 52,856.09; AI infrastructure names powered almost all of the gain. SpaceX jumped about 8% on its first quarterly profit as a public company, and Tesla climbed on news that its board and SpaceX's have formed special committees to explore a merger that could create a combined company worth over $3.5 trillion. That would potentially be the largest corporate merger ever, though no deal or timeline exists yet. SpaceX's $4.4 billion net income, versus a loss a year ago, was driven mainly by its AI compute and Starlink businesses; Starlink subscribers are up 88% year-on-year.

That rally sits uneasily next to the night's futures reaction. Nasdaq 100 futures slipped 1.3% and S&P futures fell 0.7% after Tesla's and Meta's earnings split the market's AI-spending conviction. Netflix fell 5.3% after its slowest quarterly revenue growth in years and 1,000 job cuts, including its chief content officer. AT&T fell 6.5% on competition and guidance worries. The bubble debate is now explicit at the top of finance. Citadel's Ken Griffin said investors are "almost certainly" in an AI bubble; BlackRock's Larry Fink countered that slowing AI datacenter buildout would itself be more inflationary, given how much US capex now runs through tech. Anthropic's leaked IPO filing plans to spend up to $750 billion on compute, against $16.3 billion in first-half revenue and a large net loss from accounting charges; it is fuel for both sides of that argument.
1.45% is bitcoin's slide to $82,806, after a two-day, roughly 3% relief rally ran into resistance in the $84,500 to $85,000 zone. Profit-taking, softer futures funding and mixed ETF flows are keeping it range-bound between $81,000 and $87,000. Open interest sits back above $27 billion, and a $286 million liquidation wipeout hit short positions. Michael Saylor still sees $100,000 within 12 months; high yields and light positioning are capping any near-term breakout.

EUR/USD is pinned near 1.12, up 0.09%. French 10-year yields sit above 5%, the highest since 2002 and a symptom of the Paris riots' fiscal fallout; that caps the euro's upside, while a softer dollar (DXY near 101.8, off last week's 18-month high) provides the floor. The Fed meets October 28 and the ECB October 29; both are expected to hold, with rate cuts priced for December. Thursday's jobless claims and Friday's flash PMIs are the next catalysts. Meta posted record quarterly revenue of $64.2 billion and narrowed 2026 capex guidance to $135-145 billion, even as it absorbed a $25 billion New Mexico civil penalty (more below) without a stock hit. Investors' focus stayed on the earnings beat.

The Big Story
A shooting war on Gulf shipping lanes is now a US domestic political problem, thirteen days before the midterms. Brent is holding near $110, with Goldman estimating a roughly $25 war-risk premium baked in. That premium rests on two converging dangers: Houthi attacks, and the possibility of fresh US or Israeli strikes on Iran before Election Day or Israel's October 27 vote. 23 ships were hit in the Strait of Hormuz in the first two weeks of October alone, more than all of September; Iran has reportedly shifted from drones to missiles, and the damage is heavier, with at least one sinking. Kuwait Petroleum's CEO says ship-to-ship transfers now stand in for normal transit; crude output is nearing pre-crisis levels, but refined-product shipments stay constrained.
Saudi Arabia is absorbing the worst of it directly. A Houthi drone strike hit Aramco's Shaybah oil facility and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam and killed three people; it is part of a pattern that has already struck Riyadh's own King Khalid International Airport. The State Department ordered non-essential embassy and consulate staff out of the kingdom. Britain is sending RAF Typhoon jets and a transport aircraft to help defend Saudi airspace, though officials stress the mission is defensive only, with no strikes into Yemen. Saudi Arabia postponed its "Davos in the Desert" investment conference to 2027. Bloomberg's read on the kingdom is blunt: cash rich but cash flow poor. Rising budget and current-account deficits are straining Vision 2030, even before this latest escalation. Macron made an unscheduled solidarity visit to Riyadh to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The knock-on effect inside Yemen is its own humanitarian emergency. Government forces are fighting Houthi units trying to breach besieged Taiz from the west, where food prices have risen fivefold and cooking-gas supplies are nearly exhausted.
The price is landing squarely in US politics. Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego held a Phoenix gas-station press conference blaming the Iran war for pushing gasoline from $3.29 to $4.63 a gallon, a roughly $1,000-a-year hit to families, and urged ending the conflict as the fastest route to lower prices. The Trump administration tapped the emergency Northeast home heating oil reserve for 315,000 barrels to blunt diesel costs ahead of winter. A tanker of Russian diesel set sail for the US under a Putin-Trump fuel-supply arrangement; critics call that financing the war it's supposed to be easing. Holiday airfare is up 20-31% year-on-year, partly blamed on the same oil spike. In farm-state Senate races like Iowa, diesel is up more than 70% and corn costs are nearly doubling; that is reshaping a contest Republicans once considered safe. Thirteen days out, the oil shock has become the midterms' most tangible economic fact.

US Politics
Thirteen days before the midterms, Trump's closing argument is a $5,000 check to every adult American, contingent entirely on Republicans holding the House and Senate. House Speaker Mike Johnson could not explain how the payout would actually work when asked. NBC-cited polling found only 14% of Americans believe Trump will deliver on it, with 71% skeptical even among Republicans. The pledge sits alongside similar conditional offers: a permanent year-round E15 ethanol waiver for Kansas if Senator Roger Marshall wins, withheld explicitly if Democrat Adam Hamilton takes the seat instead, and a Camp Lejeune settlement. Democrats call the pattern political blackmail.
The backdrop explains the urgency. A new CNN poll puts Trump's approval at a record-low 32%, with Democrats holding a 10-point generic-ballot lead, the widest since before the 2020 election, and erosion even among white voters without a college degree, long a core Trump bloc. More than 13 million early votes have already been cast, with Democrats outpacing Republicans roughly 51% to 32% in one tally; NBC's Steve Kornacki notes the pool of persuadable voters is shrinking fast. Billionaire money is pouring in at record scale. Michael Bloomberg pledged roughly $80 million to House Democrats, while Elon Musk has poured an estimated $276-366 million into Republican races, nearly $200 million of that in the Texas Senate race alone. Democrat James Talarico is turning Musk's spending into his own closing argument there, branding Ken Paxton a billionaire-funded "puppet politician." AI-generated political ad spending has surged to over $137 million this cycle, up from under $50,000 two years ago, almost entirely untouched by federal disclosure rules.
The sharpest self-inflicted wound is in Ohio. Vivek Ramaswamy's campaign spent $4 million on an ad featuring Democratic gubernatorial rival Amy Acton's estranged mother calling Acton "a liar." That line detonated once it emerged Acton had been sexually abused as a child by her mother's husband. Acton's brother called it "a despicable low." Even Republican Senate candidate John Husted said he "would not have run that ad," while Vice President JD Vance defended it and called GOP critics "disgusting" for focusing on the ad over policy. A new Marist poll shows Acton leading Ramaswamy by roughly seven points; multiple networks read the controversy as having widened, not narrowed, that lead.

The same dynamics repeat elsewhere, in miniature. In South Carolina, a seat Trump won by 17-18 points in 2024, the Cook Political Report downgraded appointed Senator Darlene Graham from solid to lean Republican against pediatrician Annie Andrews. In Georgia, Jon Ossoff leads Mike Collins by eight points in a new poll and is hammering Governor Brian Kemp over Medicaid expansion. In Michigan, roughly $280 million has been spent on the Mike Rogers-Abdul El-Sayed Senate race; Black voter turnout in Detroit and Flint is viewed as the likely deciding factor. Bill Clinton made his own midterm debut, stumping for David Jolly, a former Republican now running for Florida governor as a Democrat.

World
Ukraine-Russia. US envoy Steve Witkoff spent roughly three hours with Putin in St Petersburg and came away with the release of detained American teacher Stephen Hubbard. Calling Putin "a humanitarian" on camera drew immediate bipartisan fire in Washington, including from Senators Tillis, Collins and Cornyn. Putin agreed in principle to resume trilateral talks, tentatively around November 10, but reportedly found "little of substance" in the proposals carried over from Witkoff's prior Oslo meeting with Zelensky. Trump kept pressing Zelensky to "make a deal," saying the US has gotten "nothing back" but "high diesel." Zelensky insists Ukraine is "not losing this war" but is "losing people and time." The more combustible story is a Wall Street Journal report alleging Elon Musk personally ordered a slowdown of the Starlink service Ukraine's military depends on for drone operations and early warning. Musk and Trump deny it. Marco Rubio said the government "cannot direct a private company"; Senator Elizabeth Warren and Ukrainian officials are demanding an investigation, saying the slowdown cost lives. Strikes continued regardless. Russian missiles hit Kyiv and Kharkiv and killed several, including a one-year-old girl, while Ukraine launched roughly 1,000 drones at Russian oil facilities near St Petersburg.

Sudan. A drone strike blamed on Sudan's army killed more than 150 people at a market in the disputed Abyei border region; roughly 150 more died in separate West Kordofan strikes over the weekend. RSF drones hit a Blue Nile power station and targeted Khartoum's airport; shrapnel killed three children in a nearby neighborhood. The UN says drone strikes are now the leading cause of civilian deaths in the three-year war, which has displaced roughly 14 million people and pushed the Sudanese pound past 10,000 to the dollar, from 600 when the war began. The UN's humanitarian response plan is only about 43% funded. Representatives from 26 countries met in Geneva for a sixth round of peace coordination talks.

France. Paris, Lyon and Marseille extended curfews. Macron, criticized for touring the Gulf and attending a concert mid-crisis, called Trump's claim that migrants and jihadists are driving the unrest "stupid." Retailer Carrefour cut its full-year outlook over looting damage, and the CAC 40 is trading at its widest discount to Germany's DAX in nearly two decades. New polling taken during the unrest shows Marine Le Pen leading France's presidential field.

Gaza and Israel. The World Food Programme is cutting Gaza assistance from 1.6 million to 1.1 million people and halving rations. It cites a $450 million funding shortfall tied directly to the US ending its role as the largest humanitarian donor, not to reduced need. Engine oil inside Gaza now runs over $1,300 a liter. Israel faces accusations of near-daily ceasefire violations more than a year after the truce; Al Jazeera cites over 1,500 Palestinians killed in strikes since it began. Days before Israel's October 27 election, neither Netanyahu's bloc nor challenger Gadi Eisenkot's centrist bloc has a clear majority. Arab-Israeli turnout, roughly a fifth of the electorate, could be the kingmaker. A new Democracy Perception Index ranks Israel the world's most negatively perceived country, ahead of North Korea and Iran. VP JD Vance declined to endorse Netanyahu despite Trump calling him a "great warrior prime minister."

Australia. Independent MP Helen Haines had her second leg amputated, a day after losing the first; police believe it followed a deliberate car-ramming attack outside her Wangaratta office. A 43-year-old suspect, described as a longtime family friend, faces charges of intentionally causing serious injury, and an attempted-murder charge is still under consideration. Her husband confirmed she is "alive and stable." Australia's governor-general called it a national tragedy amid wider warnings about rising threats against lawmakers.

Business & tech
Netflix cut about 1,000 jobs (6% of staff), including its chief content officer, after its slowest revenue growth in years and a stock decline of more than 25% in 2026; it is pivoting toward live sports and theatrical releases to compete with YouTube and TikTok.
A New Mexico jury found Meta misled consumers on privacy more than 43 million times; a judge ordered a $25 billion civil penalty plus 15% annual interest, tied to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, and Meta will appeal.

Governments and firms across Europe raced to patch two critical, AI-discovered flaws in PHP, the language that underpins roughly 70% of the world's websites; some sites went offline as a precaution. A US cybersecurity firm and OpenAI found the flaws independently.
North Korea said it is reactivating border loudspeaker propaganda against South Korea and threatened "resolute action." Analysts linked that to accelerated missile testing and a deepening military relationship with Russia worth an estimated $20 billion in benefits.

The UK government approved the long-delayed Jackdaw gas field off Aberdeen. Trump praised the move, climate campaigners called it "climate vandalism" that will not cut bills, and PM Andy Burnham floated scrapping gas standing charges ahead of next week's budget.

A UK government-commissioned review found three in five Jewish students have experienced antisemitism at school; ministers accepted all 27 recommendations, including adopting the IHRA definition.
Disasters & crime
A woman testified at Russell Brand's Southwark Crown Court trial that he anally raped her at his London home in 2009; she told the court "you treated me like an animal." Brand denies all seven charges.

Florida's attorney general arrested Kissimmee Mayor Jackie Espinosa on grand theft and fraud charges and alleges she steered $90,000 in COVID relief funds to her family's businesses.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed a new investigation into jailed former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson, already serving 15 years for child sex offences, over an allegation he raped a woman in the House of Commons in 2016.

A second lawsuit in days accused a fraternity near the University of Chicago of a drugging and sexual assault; it echoes the Cornell case and a wider reckoning over Greek-life safety.

An NBC News investigation found mold, inadequate medical care and four deaths since September at California's Adelanto ICE facility, still run profitably by GEO Group after it sold the facility to DHS.
King Charles joined survivors in Wales to mark 60 years since the Aberfan coal tip collapse killed 144 people, mostly children; officials warned hundreds of disused tips remain unstable.
